We’ve been hearing some fantastic comments from you about how much you enjoyed the Graduation Ball, and how it was a brilliant finale to your time at Southampton. However, we know that some of you were specifically looking forward to seeing Example, and that the change in line up may have left you feeling disappointed. To remedy this we are offering a partial reimbursement of £10 to all ticket holders, which is as a result of the reduced costs that we faced due to the last minute change in line up.

Union president Sam Ling said:

“We were really disappointed when Example cancelled, especially as so many of the Graduation Ball attendees were looking forward to seeing him. We decided to offer a payment directly to attendees as their imminent graduations mean they won’t gain any direct benefit the reinvestment of the money saved in our provision for students. I know that loads of people had a fantastic time at the event and that the partial reimbursement will help to console the few who felt let down.”

Our Box Office does not store individuals card details for security reasons, so we will be emailing ticket purchasers in the very near future to tell them how the claim their payment, which will be made by cheque.

Congratulations to the University of Southampton’s Class of 2013!

Last night DJ Fresh, Amelia Lily, and Scott Mills rocked the 2013 Graduation Ball with performances from Pendulum and Stavros Flatley. Scott Mills had a great time and we hope you did too!

Had a great night at @yoursusu great crowd!! Love Southampton my home town

— Scott Mills (@scott_mills) June 11, 2013

Oceana was packed full of thousands of graduands, for the biggest night of the year, with the Ice-House, Disco Room, and Bar Quarters filled all evening. The fairground outside proved a hit with the dodgems the most popular attraction. Particular highlights include DJ Fresh and Fleur performing together on the Ice-House stage and Chris Stark’s pop disco.

Unfortunately, Example was unable to perform, due to illness, however Fleur and DJ Fresh took to the stage for an extra appearance. Union President, Sam Ling, has said “We are currently determining the savings made from Example not performing, and the aim is that we put that right back into the students who attended the ball.”

We’ll have more to say about the Graduation Ball as we wake up, but for now here are what some University of Southampton students had to say about the evening:

@stavrosflatley you guys were awesome last night at @yoursusu gradball!

From this afternoon, Connaught and Glen Eyre halls are going to be bouncing as they hold their biggest end-of-year event yet. Not only will Trevor Nelson and Cassetteboy be headlining the festival but there will also be inflatables and live-music all day.

Freshers Fest starts in Connaught’s quads at 3PM today with face-painting, bouncy castles, bungee runs and much more. There will also be a selection of local and student bands playing the main stage; fingers crossed it’ll be the perfect chance to grab some mates and celebrate the end of exams in the sun!

It’s all going to end on Saturday evening with the grand Glen Eyre End of Year Ball to see out first year in style. BBC Radio 1xtra DJ Trevor Nelson will be there as the hall will be decked out with photo booths and a chocolate fountain. Cassette Boy, who made this amazing Apprentice parody, will also be performing an extra special video DJ set to end the night.

We’re very pleased to announce that following consultation with students, a plan to radically transform the social, catering and support facilities at Winchester School of Art has been approved by the University of Southampton.

The development, which will include new students’ union facilities, is scheduled to happen this summer so that it’s ready in time for the start of new academic year in September.

The University of Southampton is investing around £750,000 in to the project, and we’ve facilitated on-going consultation on the project with our members to help ensure that the development will meet the needs of students who study at Winchester School of Art.

Our new SUSU facilities will be located at the heart of the Winchester School of Art campus, where it will be far easier for students based in Winchester to access students’ union officers, staff, and services like The Advice Centre. On top of this, the development will provide a more flexible space which will allow a wider offering of events and activities and make it easier for student groups to establish themselves in Winchester.

The development will begin at the end of the summer term, and will be complete by the start of the autumn term, meaning that our members can begin the new academic year with fantastic new facilities.

Last month saw the launch of a brand new fundraising initiative from the Raise and Give team at SUSU, which saw a week of ambitious activity across the whole of the University of Southampton to promote the message Give £1 and Change a Life.

The results of The Big Give were truly amazing - in just 5 days the team helped to raise an outstanding £6,612.61! This total will be added to the donations made throughout this academic year, with the final amount being split equally between the nominated charities Southampton Samaritans, The Anthony Nolan Trust and WaterAid.

Your donations really well help save lives, so we want to say a huge thank you to the 57 volunteer Big Give Champions, the RAG team, the students and staff who helped fund raise and everyone who donated what they could. Here’s an idea of how the money raised here at the University of Southampton will be spent:

It costs just £2.29 for a volunteer at Samaritans to answer a call and £3 to answer an email to people in need of support.

For every £1 donated to The Anthony Nolan Trust 74p goes towards recruiting donors and providing transplants for people in desperate need, 14p goes towards raising more money to help do even more for the future, 7p goes towards research to help make transplants even more successful, 4p goes on education programmes and 1p gets spent on governance.

WaterAid can use a £2 donation for a rainwater collection system, £5 on a locally hand-made pump for a village and just £10 to build a well that reaches water far below the ground to help provide clean, safe drinking water to communities.

The Big Give will be back next year, and we’re hoping to get even more students and staff involved to help us get to our target of raising over £22,000 in just one week!

At the end of last week we were very pleased to complete our Graduation Ball 2013 line-up with the addition of some of the amazing student talent from the University of Southampton.

Student band Triassic and students from our very own DJSoc will provide support in The Bar Quarter at Oceana on Monday 10th June, sharing the stage with popstar and X Factor 2011 contestant Amelia Lily and massive UK producer DJ Fresh.

Triassic are growing their fan base in Southampton, after securing first place in a Southampton vs Portsmouth battle of the bands contest against over 40 other groups. Their prize was a session to record an EP, which launched at local venue The Talking Heads in December 2012 and has now sold over 200 copies.

The band said: “As well as our first and second year fans, the majority of our 600 fans are third year students at the University from which we have received a truly humbling amount of support, as such we feel that we owe them a fantastic final show before we go our separate ways, and could not think of a better place to do this than at their Graduation Ball.”

Students from DJSoc will also playing sets in The Bar Quarter – check out this set recorded last month at Orange Rooms or take a look at their Facebook group.

Tickets for Graduation Ball are on sale now to all University of Southampton students, who can each buy up to four tickets, and are available online from www.susu.org/boxoffice or in person from The Box Office at Reception (Building 40).

You can also buy tickets for a special Graduation Ball Pre-Party in The Bridge, which includes a delicious three course meal, a glass of bubbly and free transport to Oceana for just £15. For details of the evening’s menu, take a look at the Graduation Ball Facebook Event.
