Oli’s decision and next year
As you might have heard this afternoon, Oli Coles, our Vice President Student Communities has made the decision to not take up his second year in office. As Union President, I feel that it’s important to explain what this will mean for SUSU next year.
It’s incredibly tough to make a decision of this magnitude; this is Oli’s decision, as it is his job and his life, and I completely support him in that. I would like to thank Oli for all of his hard work this year and everyone at SUSU wishes him good luck in the future.
Thanks to all those who have messaged Oli with support and understanding, as I’m sure it means a lot to him. I’ve been disappointed with some comments attacking Oli and talking about bullying. Whilst Oli is the only person who can truly articulate why he made his decision, I feel that it’s important for me to say how baseless and offensive some of these comments are. They are completely untrue and it’s a shame that this has made an already very difficult day even worse.
I know that it is only a small minority of comments, but I felt that it’s important to address them. Once again, thanks to all those who have been respectful.
Oli will continue to serve as your Vice President Student Communities until the end of this academic year. SUSU will be holding a by-election to find a student to take up the position for next year. This election will be held this term, with nominations opening on Friday 30th May and the results revealed on Friday 13th June. More information will be released once the Democracy Zone has had a chance to confirm and agree it. Every current student will be eligible to stand and vote in this election – take a look here if you are interested.
