Refurbished Islamic Prayer Facilities

In General

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This Saturday 20 October sees the official launch of the new Islamic prayer facilities at the University of Southampton, and the Islamic Society have helped to mark the occasion by organising a small opening ceremony from 1pm which culminates with the mid-day prayer at 1:30pm.

Among the guests will be Prince Badr Ben Saud Al Saud, Professor of Islamic studies in AbdulAziz University, and Dr Ibrahim Dawlish from Alqaseem University.

This event is in recognition of the successful transformation of the prayer facilities, which have undergone significant refurbishment to double the capacity, provide a more easily accessible entrance and improve the quality of essential ablution facilities.

SUSU provided support during the refurbishment, including temporary prayer facilities in one of the meeting rooms in The Union.

Our involvement in the project helped to bring about its completion in just one year, as opposed to the initial five years estimated. We’re pleased to have been able to offer help on a project that will improve students’ experience of campus. – Sam Ling, Union President

Funding for the £240,000 project was provided by the Student Centredness Fund and the Alumni Development office.

Check out the photos below showing the facilities before and after the project’s completion:
