We’ve got nine places left on Union Council that will be up for grabs at the next meeting, on Monday 2 December at 7pm.

 

Union Council is the top decision-making body here at SUSU and sets the direction for everything we do, and also holds your elected officers to account.

 

The places are available for students from particular backgrounds or studying in particular faculties – there are two post-grad (taught) places, two part-time student places and one a mature undergrad place (for those who started at 21 or older). Positions for Winter By-elections announced

The hunt is on for four new positions at SUSU as we get set for the Winter By-elections. Nominations open on Tuesday 3 December and the positions up for grabs are Postgraduate (Taught) Students Officer, Community Volunteering Officer, Outreach (Site) Officer and Physical Sciences and Engineering Faculty officer. The nominations will then close on Friday 6 December at 12pm and voting will open on Monday 9 December at 12pm, before it all closes on Wednesday 11 December at 5pm.

Southampton Blackout is back! And for the first time ever they’ve teamed up with Student Switch-off for a special Christmas competition. Student Switch-off is an energy saving competition between the university halls of residence. Blackout is an annual campus-wide energy audit involving staff and students to show the university how much energy is wasted through leaving things switched on unnecessarily.

Have your say about sustainability

Students are being invited to complete a survey investigating attitudes towards sustainability within Higher Education. By finding out students’ understanding of sustainability, the study aims to develop the University’s actions on Sustainable Development.

The survey has been organised by 3rd Year BSc Environmental Sciences Student Charlotte Hollands.

Talking about the project Charlotte said, “I would really appreciate help from my fellow students. By completing this survey,  you will be contributing to the University and SUSU in supporting and improving their sustainable practices”.

Help for students dealing with difficult emotions

On Wednesday 27 November Southampton University will be holding an emotions workshop.

Designed to help students handle the way they feel, the workshop will take place on Highfield Campus, 28 University Road from 3pm to 5pm.

The Counselling Service hopes the session will support students in developing useful coping strategies and to gain insight into managing their feelings in order to achieve a greater well-being.

Students go crazy for Christmas Ball

SUSU are pleased to announce a record amount of interest has been received for the Christmas Ball. The festive event is all set to be the biggest ball SUSU has done in years and the biggest event ever organised by the JCRs. Tickets went on sale on Monday 11th November at midday but an extra 500 had to be released on Friday 16th when the event approached capacity. By the next Monday 1400 tickets had been sold, just seven days after they went on sale.

Students enjoyed a night of French cuisine as SUSU’s bistro bar, The Bridge played host to their first ever fine dining event.  Featuring food prepared by our Michelin star trained chef,  the night was a resounding success, with both high ticket sales and positive comments on the high quality of food. With a choice of two ticket options, a five course menu was on offer including dishes such as Ham Hock Pot-Au-Feu, Chicken & Mushroom Terrine with pickled pear and salmon ballontine with Dijon mustard and dill dressing.  Vegetarian options were also available, as well as a special lemon parfait … Read the rest

Christmas countdown commences

The Christmas countdown has officially begun as the Christmas Light Switch on is confirmed for Friday November 29th. Taking place on the grassed area next to the SUSU Redbrick Square in front of Building 40, the festive fun will start at 4pm with a Christmas market.

The lights will then be switched on at 6pm by Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Professor Mark Spearing and the team of students who represented the University of Southampton in the Enactus World Cup this year.
