Southampton Students celebrate volunteering

Southampton Hub, a student group at the University of Southampton, and SUSU’s Community Action Group are teaming up to participate in a national event to celebrate

volunteering in Higher Education; ‘Student Volunteering Week’. Plans are afoot for a variety of events and stunts, including a campaign to encourage further volunteering and one-off  opportunities for students to get involved in the local community.

Since last November Southern Britain has experienced extreme weather. Rain, wind and saturation mean many buildings have struggled to cope. The result for many student homes is missing tiles, leaks and damp. Lots of students have come to the Advice Centre asking, ‘what are my rights?’ and ‘how can I get things fixed?’ We thought it might help to post some advice more widely.

Sport Relief stories

Plans are well underway for Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile 2014. As we get set to co-host the event alongside Southampton Solent University, Saints Foundation and the Southampton City Council, we want to hear your stories.

It is all taking place on Sunday 23 March in the Southampton Guildhall Square and you have the option to run a mile or six, perform on the day or help marshal the route.

Longer opening hours at the library

The university has announced that the Hartley library will begin trialling 24 hour opening hours. The new opening hours come as a result of VP Education David Mendoza-Wolfson’s  hard work with the library’s librarian Jane Savidge and Deputy Librarian, Richard Wake.

 

The project began with a Library Usage Focus Group, followed by the library’s Library Usage Survey to find out if there was a demand for the extended opening hours.

As the country continues to battle the extreme weather, Winchester School of Art are working hard to keep the student disruption to a minimum.

 

Ed D’Souza, Acting Head of School Winchester School of Art explains, “there has been a great effort across the School and University as soon as it became apparent that there might be a flood risk to the School something which hasn’t happened for 14 years.”
