Stress Less Fest is back!

Back by popular demand: from May 19 – May 23, SUSU will be holding its infamous Stress Less Fest on campus.

With exam period commencing that very week, this is a timely opportunity time to battle stress-levels university-
wide. Many students will be pleased to hear about the return of the Petting Zoo and Bungee Runs on the

Redbrick. The fun-filled week will kick off with the distribution of free bananas and some helpful wellbeing

advice between 11 and 2 on May 19.

Roundup of the Excellence in Volunteering Awards 2014

Another year, and another opportunity to celebrate and reward the inspirational volunteering efforts made by societies and individuals within SUSU. The seven award categories, as well as relating to the values of SUSU, are

designed to represent and recognise the many varieties of volunteering that take place within the Students’ Union.

The categories included: Commitment, Leadership, Innovation, Impact, Engagement, Collaboration and The Volunteer award – for outstanding individuals who have shown many of the above personality traits, as well as enthusiasm and great personal drive. SUSU holds another Wellbeing Week

In General

We’ve had Mental Health Awareness Day, we’ve had a Mental Wellbeing Conference: now SUSU is planning

another fun-filled Wellbeing Week from 12 – 16 May (just in time for the Summer Exams!). Students will be

encouraged to focus on maintaining their physical wellbeing as the ever-stressful exam period draws closer. The

aim of the event is to promote healthy living by obtaining tips on how to stay fit and eat well, giving out

information on mental and sexual health and even some tips on how to stay on top of your finances. With the

Roundup of the Excellence in Teaching Awards

In General

Last month, nominations for the annual Excellence in Teaching Awards (ETAs) opened on the SUSU website. The

Students’ Union has been urging University of Southampton students to nominate and vote for members of

academic staff who have really made a difference by using innovative and practical teaching methods to help

students reach their potential. In the words of VP Education David Mendoza-Wolfson, “we shouldn’t just be

having a go when lecturers don’t quite cut it, but elevating those lecturers who make it worth getting to your

Mental Wellbeing Conference

In General

Following the success of Mental Health Awareness Day earlier this year, SUSU will be holding a Mental

Wellbeing Conference on campus. The aim of the event is to raise awareness and give out information about

different services available to students with mental health issues, which are thought to affect at least 30% of the

student body. A timely occasion what with the commencement of the Summer Exams, SUSU are doing all we

can to bring mental health to the forefront of student conversation by running various activities to provide

SUSU holds Hustings on Campus

In General

In light of the upcoming EU Elections, SUSU invited a number of parties to a hustings event at the Bridge last

Thursday. As well as a chance to hear about party politics the event gave students the opportunity to raise

questions about particular policies and issues so as to make an informed choice on election day. The parties

which made an appearance were: the Liberal Democrats, Green Party, Labour Party, Conservative Party, the

Students’ Union AGM Ideas Ranking complete

In General

Last week gave students the chance to vote on which ideas they’d like to see discussed at the upcoming SUSU

AGM. From banning Sabbatical Officers from rerunning to pitching the idea of keeping a SUSU kitten (and lion!)

almost 30 suggestions were made, giving students and trustees plenty to talk about at the general meeting. The

AGM will see the discussion of these student-submitted policies and the election of the Chair of Union Council.

SUSU sign up to mental health anti-stigma pledge

In General

SUSU, University of Southampton Students’ Union, today joined the growing number of companies committing to end the stigma and discrimination against people with experience of mental health problems by signing a pledge with Time to Change, which is a programme run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

The signing ceremony will take place in the Cube at SUSU on the 10 May from 11.45-12.15pm and representatives from SUSU will pledge their support to ‘Time to Change’, promoting a better understanding of mental health problems while offering support and welfare advice to their staff.

Enterprise course for entrepreneurial students

In General

Fancy setting up your own business after university, but unsure where to start? Well you’re in luck, because an educational course in enterprise is now accepting applications. The course which will take place at Totton College in Southampton is called Enterprise4Totton and aims to provide the skills needed to start a business.

Hartley Library announces extended hours during the Summer term

In General

In response to student demand, staff at Hartley Library have announced their extended opening hours during the upcoming exam period, made possible by the Education Enhancement fund.

“From Monday 28th April – Friday 6th June, the Hartley Library will be open continuously every day of the week.

Saturdays are special, though – the Library will close at midnight, have a short break, refresh and open again on Sunday at 9:00 a.m., continuing throughout the week.
