Last week at SUSU saw the end of an era, as the Sabbatical team from 2013/14 handed over to the incoming officers prior to the beginning of their year in office this Tuesday.
We spoke to the new Sabbatical team about the handover week, and about their outlook on the year in general. They were all in agreement that the handover week had been a fantastic experience, with Anjit Aulakh (incoming VP Communities) saying that it had been “probably [his] best week in Southampton yet… surreal and an absolute blast.”
Sophia D’angelico (incoming VP Education) added that it had … Read the rest
Later this week (Friday 4 and Saturday 5 July), the University of Southampton will be holding Open Days to give prospective students the chance to visit the campus and find out more about what the University and SUSU can offer.
SUSU will be open and thriving during these two days, as many student groups have been offered the chance to appear on campus during the day in order to promote their society – a good chance to get their oar in and draw in potential new Freshers before the madness of The Bunfight kicks off in September.

Exams may be over but June can often be a stressful time as students hurriedly attempt to pack up all worldly belongings ready to take back home or to transport to another student dwelling. To make it a little bit easier, here are some top tips to help you save a bit of money when vacating your property.
Sell your stuff: You’ll often find that as soon as you start packing, you realise that you actually have a lot of stuff you don’t use or want anymore. If you haven’t used something in the past 12 months it’s probably … Read the rest
Over the summer break, thousands of students look for work experience, summer jobs and internships. They help students build up some finances and grow their experience for employment after graduation.
For our students, it’s obviously very important that you’re treated fairly whilst on internships. If you’re classed as a worker on an internship, then you are due to be paid the minimum wage by law.
SUSU is helping make sure that students get this fair treatment by teaming up with Intern Aware. Intern Aware have so far helped young people claim back nearly £500,000 from employers who didn’t … Read the rest
Work has started on the renovation of the activities room on level two of the Union building.
In May 2013, the issue of a much-needed renovation was raised at the SUSU AGM, and following discussions in Union Council it was agreed that these changes would be of benefit to students.
The improvements which are currently underway include the installation of a soft, wood panelled floor suitable for dance and martial arts. New mirrors like those in the multipurpose studios, and curtains which can cover all of the windows and mirrors will also be fitted.

VP Sports Development Evan Whyte has announced that SUSU will run all intra-mural sport in the next academic year.
The announcement is coupled with a 60% cost reduction for student memberships, meaning that while Sport and Wellbeing membership is still required, the cost of joining intra-mural sports teams will decrease significantly. This means that the cost of joining the football team will be slashed from £137.50 to £55, with similar figures across the other sports teams.
Whyte has been responsible for developing the inaugural intra-mural committee which will be headed by the IM Officer, Jamie Wilson. As SUSU … Read the rest
It’s getting to that time of year when everyone is looking to clear their belongings out of their accommodation as contracts come to an end. Some first years may have experienced that first year feeling of financial fecundity, and splurged on that six-foot cardboard cut-out of a palm tree that seemed like such a good decoration idea at the time. The only problem now is what on earth do you do with it? No matter what stage of your degree you find yourself at, you always seem to end up with double the amount of belongings at the end of … Read the rest
To celebrate our beloved pet cat, Susu, we’re launching a brand new cat-themed compawtition to give you the chance to win £25 worth of SUSU vouchers.
Susu has been living around the Union since 2002 when, as a stray cat, porters started to give her food. Now a permanent resident, she can often be found in her bed on level 4 of the Union. Last year she was even the mascot for the team from University of Southampton on University Challenge. So what better way to revere our cherished moggy than by holding a competition in her honour?!
In order … Read the rest
It’s a big, scary world out there – particularly for an undergraduate taking that seemingly small step over that invisible line where the word ‘under’ suddenly gets dropped. Before they know it, they’re just a ‘graduate’, and what on earth are they going to do? Well, as it turns out, that’s exactly what we’d like to know. The Destination of Leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) Survey is for recent graduates. Congratulations to everyone who has just received their final degree classification, you will be hearing about the DLHE Survey from the university between 10th November 2014 and 7th March 2015. … Read the rest
SUSU has teamed up with the University of Southampton and educational crowdfunding experts Hubbub to launch a crowdfunding platform.
Students, staff members and groups can now use the platform as a way to gather financial support for projects and activities. It is hoped that the initiative will encourage a more enriched experience for those in Southampton, with the fundraising method making it easier to gain backing for projects.
Crowdfunding has grown in popularity in the last few years as a digital collection of funds from a wider community of backers to support a project. Social networking is generally … Read the rest
