Meet our student groups!
SUSU has over 300 student groups that you can get involved in. They come under the following categories: Education, External Engagement, Sports Development, Student Communities, Student Life, and Sustainability. To help you decide what societies you would like to join in September, here’s an introduction and a small taster of the variety of societies we have! We’d like to introduce you to the
Vegan and Vegetarian Society, Frisbee Society, Union Films, and LGBT Society!
Vegan and Vegetarian Society – Poppy Martin
Whether you’re a vegetarian, pescetarian, vegan, or an open-minded omnivore, join the vegetarian society to have fun and meet like-minded people. Our society organises a variety of activities including restaurant trips, cooking events, themed food nights, as well as movie nights. We are also a forum to exchange recipes and recommendations for veggie/vegan-friendly restaurants. If you are interested in joining us, then come and find us at the Bun Fight!
Frisbee Society
Skunks Ultimate Frisbee is a sports society for anyone! No prior knowledge or skill is necessary! We train twice a week with both competitive and fun tournaments throughout the year to take part in! Our open first team finished seventh at indoor nationals and our women’s team put on a strong showing despite being mostly Freshers! We have taster sessions on Sunday 28th September, and on the following Wednesdays and Fridays during our training sessions. We also take part in many dedicated beginners tournaments to help new players integrate. So come along and give it a go! Outside of actual Frisbee we have a range of themed socials interspersed throughout the year. These include pub crawls of Winchester and the Isle of Wight, as well as Tour in Salou! If this sounds like your sort of thing you can find more information on at http://skunksultimate.org.uk/ or come see us at the bunfight and say hi!’
Union Films
Union Films is your student cinema, run by students just like you! Fancy getting involved in a society where you can make loads of new friends, learn new skills and have something great to put on your CV? We offer all that and the opportunity to see your favourite films for FREE! Here you can learn how to project films on our 35mm and digital projectors, gain valuable people skills and food hygiene qualifications and even make your very own trailers and adverts for our upcoming films. Keep an eye out for us at our free films, the Bunfight and at our Get Involved Day, where you can see a taste of what we have to offer you, ask us any questions and find out more. Congratulations on your place at Southampton and we look forward to seeing you in September!
LGBT Society – Ed (Publicity Officer)
Our society is open to everyone: lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, straight, curious, confused or something else altogether! We’re here to provide a safe space for LGBT students to socialise on campus and around Southampton. We also exist to raise awareness of LGBT issues that affect our community and around the world. We work with SUSU and the University to improve students’ lives during their time with us here. You can get involved by joining our members’ Facebook group (just send a message to our page to join – fb.com/susulgbt), following us on Twitter (@susu_lgbt), and checking out our website (lgbt.susu.org). We’ll be announcing our exciting Freshers’ events very soon, but you can be sure that our infamous whitet-shirt social will be making a return! There will also be several socials where you’ll be able to get to know other society members in a more relaxed environment. We look forward to meeting you all!
