SUSU through the years
It seems hard to believe, but the University of Southampton’s Students’ Union was started a whopping 111 years ago back in 1903. Along the way there have been some famous faces and important events, so to welcome you in, we thought we would get nostalgic…
1936 – Wessex Scene goes into print as Wessex News and both the Winter and Summer Olympics take place in Germany
1962 – John Nettles OBE begins at University of Southampton and The Beatles released their first single ‘Love Me Do’
1966 – Union building constructed, Brian Eno enrolled at Winchester School of Art and England win the World Cup
1976 – Surge Radio began as Radio Heffalump and Apple is formed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak
1979 – The Really Wild Show host Chris Packham enrolls at University of Southampton and general knowledge game Trivial Pursuit is launched
1988 – BBC News correspondent Daniel Sandford graduates from University of Southampton and Kylie Minogue released her debut album
1995 – Toy Story was released, the musical theatre society SUSU Showstoppers was founded and RAG raised a record £38,000 for various charities
2001 – Radio Glen received another name change to become Surge (Southampton University Radio from Glen Eyre), and Wikipedia went online
2007 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released and SUSUtv launched
2008 – Chris Stark graduated from University of Southampton and Woolworths announced their national closure
2011 – The Edge entertainment magazine officially launched as a separate publication to the Wessex Scene and Prince William and Kate Middleton got married
