Freshers’ Week: Our BIG Dos and Don’ts
It’s likely that if you’ve read one article giving you advice on your Freshers’ week that you’ll have read hundreds, all giving the same advice: take some photos of your family so you don’t miss them too much, make sure you eat healthily, get out there and make friends, bring a toaster etc, etc, etc. They can get pretty repetitive (and it’s pretty certain that the writers are still churning out the same old advice year on year) but don’t dismiss this one just yet – we’re here to have a crack at giving you your SUSU Freshers’ BIG Dos and Don’ts…
DO…
Get stuck in at the Bunfight. It’ll be your only chance at Southampton to walk through a display of every single one of our 300+ societies, vying for your attention (and sign-up email). While it’s important to establish a healthy work ethic and focus on your course during your first year, it’s also the only year where your marks won’t count towards your final degree class – so you can afford to give a little more time to doing what you love outside of your degree.
DON’T…
Feel pressured into sticking to drinking events alone. A general preconception of Freshers’ Weeks nationwide is that it’s drink, drink, drink and then drink some more – but what if there’s more to it than that? At SUSU there definitely is: there are some great non-drinking events during both the day and evening, like the Laughter Lounge and SUSU Treasure Hunt. Most of these are included on the Easy Going Masterpass, but if you’re lucky you’ll be able to buy individual tickets to the events. Trust us – your stomach and your bank balance will thank you for just one night off.
DO…
Check out the brand new Hollywood Diner on Level 3 of the Union Building. Opening this year for Freshers’ 2014 on the 24 September, the diner is tipped to be a huge hit with students, serving classic American food – burgers, hotdogs, you name it – as well as playing host to a Minghella’s ice cream vendor. You can eat in one of the comfy striped booths, surrounded by walls full of movie memorabilia – what’s not to love? – ( Find out more about the launch of this hot new SUSU venue here )
DON’T…
Sleep through the Freshers’ Fayre. It can be easy after a late night to pass this off as unimportant – but trust us, when your flatmates come back with handfuls of free pizza and tales of other goodies going for free from countless companies, you’ll regret that lie-in. Just like the Bunfight, this is the only time in your University career that the event is open to you – get down to it!
DO…
Make time to pop down to Level 2 of the Union Building and say hi to our resident cat, Susu. She’s super relaxed and always happy to say hi to anyone in need of a furry friend.
