Freshers get ready to chill

In General

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This week has been pretty exhausting so far, so today we have plenty of choice to help you chill right out and recover… we don’t want you coming down with freshers’ flu yet!

For the early birds amongst you, we’re holding a volunteering and fundraising coffee and cake morning in The Bridge from 9 until 11am, giving you the chance to come and talk with current students about community action and volunteering opportunities around Southampton. This will be perfect for you if you want to make a difference during your spare time at university.

Fingers crossed the weather will warm up a bit today as our friends at Brothers Cider are holding a good ‘ole country bumpkin day on the Red Brick from 11am until 5pm. Not only will they be giving you the opportunity to try some of their delicious ciders, they’ll be enticing you over with a BBQ and a tractor display, right here on campus! If you head down for 1pm, you’ll also be able to catch today’s ‘random happening’ – guesses of what it will be today? Tweet us your predictions!

In between your other activities, you could also head down to The Cube, as the venue which you’ll know as home of the UV rave is transformed to a bliss palace of relaxation. From 10 until 11am we’ll have a zumba class for you to show off your moves, and a yoga class being held from 11.30am-12.30pm to keep you calm and balanced. If that wasn’t enough, from 1 until 4pm, we’ll be filling it up with more glue and felt tips than you could ever hope for, to allow you to get creative in our makeshift arts and crafts studio.

From 2 until 4pm, SUSU LGBT will be holding a chilled out welcome session, inviting anyone interested to come and drop by for a chat. They’ve been in your position before and know that coming to a social for the first time can be a bit scary, so the friendly bunch will be in The Bridge waiting to get to know you! If you needed any more reasons to go, there’ll be free tea, coffee and biscuits! What more could you ask for?!

This evening is one of the busiest of the week, with a tonne of events going on for you to choose from. Following on from the laugh-a-minute events yesterday in Winchester and in SUSU on Tuesday, more Laughter Lounges will be held in The Bridge from 6pm this evening for students living at Monte or Archers Road, and from 8pm for Liberty Point, Highfield and Chamberlain. Entry is free with an Easy Going Masterpass, while a limited amount of tickets will be available on the door for £4.

If that doesn’t take your fancy, Union Films will be screening Calvary at 7.30pm, and will also be dropping into Winchester to do a screening. Check the Facebook page for details. If that wasn’t enough film-y goodness, the Marxist Society will be screening The Spirit of ‘45 in lecture theatre D of the Nuffield Theatre (building 6, room 1129) from 7pm. Other events this evening include a Nightline taster session in Meeting Room 2 of SUSU from 6pm for those who think they want to volunteer for the anonymous listening service.

If you fancy going out for the evening, there are plenty of events to choose from this evening. The Winchester Big Night Out will take you on a tour of some of the city’s best bars and clubs, while students in Southampton can show off their vocal prowess at The Stag’s Head at karaoke; a weekly event which is sure to become one of your favourite evenings throughout your degree! The brave among you can venture off to what has been simultaneously dubbed the ‘Palace of Dreams’ and the ‘worst club in Britain’, taking in the sites, smells, and sensations of your local club in Portswood, Jesters. Our best advice? Don’t wear your nice shoes.

As always, keep us informed with what you’re doing with the hashtag #HelloSUSU. Keep us informed of the Freshers’ gossip!
