Union Stars: Leading the Way

In General

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are countless staff here at SUSU, working constantly to serve you and behind the scenes and ensuring that your students’ union runs at its absolute best. These staff range from student staff on the bars right up to the Sabbatical Officers, as well as full-time staff in the offices.

To celebrate all the hard work they put in, SUSU rewards Union Stars – those who have gone above and beyond in achieving the best for the union and truly work towards our mission statement.

We are very pleased to announce that, from all the nominations submitted over the summer, we have chosen three Union Stars: Jenna Cox from Entertainments, and Karen Lloyd and Ali McManus from the Training & Development Team.

Jenna was selected as a result of “ her commitment to the Logistics Group within the new Freshers’ planning system” as well as her effort in “inspiring others to ensure Freshers’ was better than ever.”

Karen was won her Union Star award for “ ensuring the success of an innovative and inspiring Creative Industries Training Week. [She] encouraged students to lead and be responsive throughout her training sessions, in particular her excellent Inclusivity session.”

Finally, Ali was chosen for “ her enthusiasm and passion in the organisation of the successful Sabbatical Training programme, SUSU Staff Conference and Creative Industries Training Week.”

Other nominations were received for;

Sue Brindley, Catering Manager,  Alex Procopiou, Venue Technician and Megan Downing, Vice-President Democracy & Creative Industries.

A massive congratulations to our winners and to those nominated.

So what makes a Union Star?

If you have seen someone really shine, you can nominate them to be a Union Star.  A Union Star should have shown that they have:

  • Been personally responsible and lead by example in our work
  • Been inclusive, and made sure there is something for everyone in all we do
  • Been ambitious and engaging by pushing the boundaries in what we offer members
  • Encouraged students to lead and been responsive to both staff and member ideas
  • Been transparent, open and honest with each other and our members
  • Worked together, encouraging and supporting each other to do the best we can.

The next deadline date for the Union Star (individual) Award is 17:00 on Thursday 27 November 2014. Please contact personnel@susu.org for the relevant nomination forms.
