Tunnel vision for Southampton Cyclists
14th March, Highfield Campus plays host to Science and Engineering Day – with some very exciting news for cyclists. SURC (Southampton University Road Cycling Club) will get the chance to use the wind tunnel in the engineering department to further improve the performance of their athletes, a chance their Head Coach, Alex Clayton, is keen to be taking.
“Increasingly aerodynamics are a crucial component in a cyclist’s toolbox. Having access to the Mitchell wind tunnel is a huge advantage for our top riders going into BUCS. We’re incredibly lucky to be using the same tunnel as Team GB, Team Sky and UK Olympians such as the Brownlees” he said, explaining just why the opportunity is such a fantastic one for the club to have.
Science and Engineering day takes place the day before Varsity, when sportspeople from a wide range of Southampton’s clubs take on the rival teams from Portsmouth University. Last year saw Southampton bring the cup home, and hopefully this year we’ll see the same result. With advancements in the science behind sporting success being chased here at the University, there’s a good chance we’ll go from strength to strength in the sporting arena.
