Success for External Engagement #mysusu
Over the past year we’ve worked alongside to improve our relationship with local residents and expand communication between students and the local community.
Our Vice President Engagement, Ellie Cawthera, held a Street Party in conjunction with the Outer Avenue Residents’ Association in Gordon Avenue, which hundreds of local residents came too. Following on from this hugely successful event Ellie organized the Building Bridges Curry alongside the Highfield Residents’ Association where students and local residents could meet and get to know each other.
Additionally, in March we created a community newsletter that is distributed to local residents to improve the communication between SUSU, students and the local community.
Another huge project in the External Engagement is the 2015 general elections. Ellie and the team will be arranging 4 hustings, events so that the candidates can debate in front of students about issues that matter to students. The main priority of the work around the elections has been a campaign to make sure students register to vote due to the change in voter registration meaning students now can’t be registered automatically by the University. Speaking on the campaigns and the elections in general Ellie said: “This is an enormous part of my role this year and I couldn’t be happier about it. This is the most exciting campaign I have ever been a part of let alone led on.”
“These changes have the potential to make a massive difference to the impact of the student voice in national politics, and it’s essential that students have a say in how the country is run. It’s critical that students are aware of the new process and we are working to raise their awareness of what they need to do to be eligible to vote.”
