Last chance to register to vote!

If you’ve been keeping an eye on our Facebook and Twitter, you’ll know that we’re putting the upcoming General Election pretty high up on our agenda at the moment. Students get a bad rep for not engaging in national politics – it’s time we worked together to change things.

We’ve been running the #YourVoteYourVoice campaign on our dedicated site, and we’ve got a Thunderclap campaign too – it only takes a second to join, and automatically uses your social media profiles to spread awareness.

But if you’ve missed all this, then you might still not be registered to vote. Registration can be done online, and closes at 5pm on Monday 20th April. Aside from missing out on your chance to choose who runs your country, there’s also a potential £80 heading your way if you haven’t registered – and no one needs that on a student budget! You can visit our Facebook event to check if you’re registered to vote.

Once that deadline passes, we’ve got a whole host of local debates coming up, held on campus:

  • Monday 27th April will see the debate for the Southampton Test constituency, and we’re holding it in Garden Court (Building 40) from 6pm. You can register for a free ticket here.
  • The debate for the Southampton Itchen constituency will follow on Friday 1st May in the Sir James Matthews Building at Southampton Solent University.
  • We’ll be holding the Southampton North and Romsey constituency debate at Glen Eyre on Saturday 2nd May from 6pm, and you can reserve your free ticket here.
  • Finally, the debate for the Winchester constituency will be held on Tuesday 5th May at the WSA Cafe, from 4pm – tickets can be reserved here.

And after all that, polling day is on Thursday May 7th. Your polling station will be made clear to you on your polling card that will come through the post – once you’ve cast your vote, join us in the Bridge from 10pm for the results!
