Society Spotlight: Meet Bhangra Society

In General

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We caught up with Sachin, the President of the Southampton Bhangra Society, to ask all about Bhangra, including what it is and how you can get involved.

When did the society start?

In 2012.

Describe Bhangra Society and what it is you do.

Bhangra Society is a fun and lively dancing society. Full of energy, it is the society that rewards you with a great time and a great workout. We are part of the Performing Arts societies.

What is Bhangra?

Bhangra is a traditional North Indian dance from the Punjab region, and has really taken off in the U.K. Throughout the years more and more Bhangra shows and competitions have formed and now Bhangra has grown in the university scene also. Southampton Bhangra Society has competed twice in the national Bhangra competition Capital Bhangra and both times has done amazingly well.

What is the best part about being involved in your society?

Coming to classes is probably the most enjoyable part of being in our society. The classes are run by the committee and we teach small routines that can later be used to show off in the clubs! Not to mention the fact if you ever attend an Asian wedding you’re guaranteed to turn a few heads when you step on the dance floor and show your skills.

Why should students join Bhangra Society?

Bhangra is something that’s a little out of the box and people always say try something new at university and Bhangra is definitely something that’s easy to fall in love with. It is one of the few things that really leaves you smiling and feeling good about yourself.

What sets your society apart from other dance societies?

When we perform in shows, we get to wear the brightest and coolest outfits ever. I mean, we go all out with looking colourful and energetic and I think that really does set us apart from the other societies.

If you could teach us one thing about Bhangra or the society, what would it be?

The world’s current best Bhangra team is from the U.K.

Does your society require any equipment to take part e.g. clothing, equipment, safety equipment?

Our society only requires a big smile from everyone… and comfy clothing too!

Tell us about any events/meetings coming up.

We haven’t got any dates as such for our events but Bhangra does have a performance in Portsmouth, we also have a performance for the Asian Cultural Society Show Dhaamal around February, and last but certainly not least, we have Pure Dance which is always a massive favourite.

What is the best way for students to contact you?

Someone is always on our society’s Facebook page at some point, so drop us a message!

If your society or student group would like to be featured on our next Student Group Spotlight, please contact us on the SUSU or The Union – Winchester Facebook pages.
