While studying in Southampton, you have the perfect opportunity to explore a new city. After visiting the outlets that you have on your doorstep at the Students’ Union, you may want to branch out further afield. From the weird to the wonderful, here are some of the quirkier places to visit that you may not have come across before…
Centre for snakes, geckos, chameleons…you name it! This UK exotic animal centre even sells the reptiles too. That python could make a perfect house pet – or not!

If you’re more of a culture vulture, you can view some work from some of the most prestigious contemporary artists from across the world right on your doostep at the University’s John Hansard Gallery. Consisting of five exhibition every year, you can experience something new every visit.

Known for its open mic nights, comedy and eclectic mix of music, this is destined to be a great evening. It’s only in Porstwood too so no travelling excuse!

Union Films (Students’ Union Cinema)
Located on the second level of the SUSU building (42) the 320 seat cinema is a great way to
watch new films without the massive price tag. Amazing convenience since being located on
campus, there are even free film screenings (often on Thursdays).

Chalk Valley is a new concept in fast casual dining. It is an artisan steak and burger bar with huge ethical policies. For example 100% of its beef is grass-fed and it sources locally to avoid a higher carbon footprint.

Take a stroll on the bridge over the 28 mile long chalk river and look at the beautiful views either side. The River Itchen is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), which proves that this is an ecologically diverse area one needs to experience. This bridge can be found on the A3025 road (Southwest Southampton) and is free to pass for pedestrians.
The only beach in Southampton
Weston Shore is the only beach in Southampton and in those rare sunny days who wouldn’t want to hit the Southampton beach! Although it’s a shingle beach rather than sand, it means there’s less mess afterwards and no sandy sandwiches!
