Grad Ball through the ages

In General

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You’ll have seen the announcements on Facebook, and pencilled the date in your diary; there’s no doubt about it, Graduation Ball 2016 is on the way.

Taking place on the 6th of June 2016, the fantastic event is always a night to remember. In anticipation of the first wave of information being released on Monday (18th of April), we take a look back at previous year’s graduation balls.

Last year we saw the likes of Katy B, Bass Hunter and Labrinth take over Oceana, with the ‘Music Through The Ages’ themed event. Each room was themed with different decades, and there was even a performance from the ultimate throwback, S Club 7.

In 2014 there was a Hollywood theme, which meant Oceana was decked out with Gatsby glamour and Oscar charm. The headline act was Ella Eyre, who entertained the crowd with huge anthems like her collaboration with Rudimental ‘Waiting All Night’. There were also appearances from boy band Lawson, Gorgon City and Blue.

Taking back to 2013 it was another event at Oceana. With appearances from Radio 1 DJs (and student radio station Surge alumni) Scott Mills and Chris Stark, DJ Fresh and Fleur (who’s now known as Fleur East!)

2012 boasted the theme ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’ and featured a performance from BBC Radio 1 legend Annie Mac, as well as Pixie Lott, Chris Stark and Chesney Hawkes. It also featured a text message display board, which bore much entertainment across the night…

Back in 2011 the event was held at the City Cruise Terminal, which had acts like Tinchy Stryder and again, Chesney Hawkes. Watch a video of the night here.

Going back another year, to 2010, Grad Ball was held across two nights at the Guildhall, with a headline performance from Feeder, with a DJ set from Southampton favourite Scott Mills.

If you want to go even further back in time you can check out this video from Grad Ball 2009.

And you can even hop back another year and see what it was like in 2008 through SUSUtv‘s coverage of the event here. Held once again at the Southampton Guildhall, there was, of course,  another performance from Southampton’s favourite: Chesney Hawkes.

But what’s 2016 going to be like? The best yet.

This year every effort has been made to ensure Graduation Ball 2016 is the night of the year, including introducing a panel of students making up a ‘Grad Ball Committee’ to get your feedback. With the tension mounting, we caught up with your Union President, Ben Franklin, who said: “I’m really excited that this year we’ve got such a wide reaching committee, from those involved with SUSU to those who’ve never been involved in much before, covering all courses – it means this year there really will be something for everyone!”

Look out for the announcement on Monday at www.susugradball.com
