Living at home after university

In General

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Whether you’ve finished for the summer or finished for good, living at home post University isn’t always the easiest experience. Here are our top tips on how to make the transition comfortable for both you and your parents.

Work through it

As tempting as it might be to hide away with a mountain of box sets, there’s nothing better for taking your mind off things than getting a job. Whether it’s a part-time job to put some extra cash in your pocket, work experience to further your career or even a spot of volunteering, it will keep you busy and give you a focus.

Get out and about

Returning home after such a long time away is a great opportunity to renew yourself with everything you’ve missed – and discover new things too. Especially if you’re back for the summer, when (hopefully) you have lots of great weather to take advantage of!

Do your bit

Whether it’s contributing towards rent, chipping in with bills or doing your bit around the house, helping out will keep your parents from nagging and will also let them know how much you appreciate them.

Respect is a two-way street

You’ve done a lot of growing up since being at university and you’ll want to be treated like an adult, but it’s important to remember that your parents deserve respect too. Be considerate of the way they live and they’ll return the favour.

The plus side

Although returning home may feel like a step back, don’t forget about all the good things you’ve been missing out on at uni. Good home cooked food; the chance to save some money; as much TV as you like; no annoying housemates. It’s not all bad!

Old friends and new

Being at home is a chance to get back in touch with some old faces, and don’t forget to check in with your new uni friends too. The chance is many of them are going through the same experiences as you, and a good catch up will help you both vent how you’re feeling.

Make yourself at home

Since moving out, no doubt you’ve changed a lot but your old bedroom is probably still stuck in a time warp with outdated bits and pieces that no longer reflect who you are. So take the opportunity to update your room and really make yourself at home while you’re back.

And failing all that, don’t forget our Advice Centre is open all summer to offer support on any issues you may have.

We hope you all have a great time at home and, for those of you returning at the end of the summer, we look forward to welcoming you back in September!
