Union Southampton funded project presented at United Nations
A University of Southampton student presents his sustainable fishing project to the United Nations, following a £300 investment from our Union.
We made the £300 investment towards prototypes as part of the our Enterprise Fund in May 2016. The fund aims to support students launch their own businesses and community projects.
Andreas Ostrovsky, presented ‘Right Light Technologies’ to the United Nations last week to showcase his project to help create an environmentally and economically sustainable fishing industry. Right Light Technologies design solar powered fishing lamps as an alternative to pressurised kerosene lanterns used in the night fishing industry in Daggaa (Sardines) in Lake Victoria.
Andreas says, “The last couple of months have been an incredible ride… In the next few months we will be establishing as an organisation, building our team, and launching our large scale pilot of about 200 lamps in Tanzania… Thanks again to the Union for the Enterprise Fund opportunity!”
Vice-President Engagement, Dan Varley says, “The Enterprise Fund is a relatively new Union initiative, but it just shows the impact that schemes likes this can have on a business start-up. I’m proud to see students taking ownership of their ideas and making them happen! I hope that this will encourage more students to take their ideas to the next level and consider turning them into a business”.
Look out for the next opportunity to apply for our Enterprise Fund in November this year. Find out more at www.unionsouthampton.org.
