Southampton Refugee Month

Twenty-four of our student groups are getting together to launch a new and exciting programme of events: Southampton Refugee Month. Organised to raise awareness of the current refugee crisis all over the world, with a particular emphasis on Syria, the following events will give you the chance to find out more and inspire you to get involved…

Thursday 03 November – FREE screening of The White Helmets

  • 19:00 at 46/2003, Physics Building, Highfield Campus
  • Get down to the Physics Building to watch The White Helmets for free. This hard-hitting documentary follows the volunteer rescue workers put their lives on the line to save civilians amidst the turmoil and violence in Syria and Turkey.

Thursday 10 November – Expression: Poetry and Music Night Showcase for Soton2Calais

  • 19:00 at Tokyo Bar, Bedford Place, Southampton
  • A poetry and music night showcasing Southampton’s finest talents! There’s a line-up of students who will be performing. Proceeds go to Soton2Calais which is a refugee solidarity group based in Southampton.

Wednesday 16 November – Bake Sale for the British Red Cross

  • 13:00-16:00 at Union Building, Highfield Campus
  • Fundraising for British Red Cross which helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. They are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters, and individual emergencies. They also help vulnerable people in the UK and abroad prepare for, withstand and recover from emergencies in their own communities. Vegan and gluten-free options available.

 Monday 21 November – Donation Stall for Soton2Calais

  • All day, Union Building, Highfield Campus
  • Drop off any clothes, shoes, blankets, tents, anything for refugees on the French coast for them to use to stay warm and safe this winter. Processed by Soton2Calais.

Friday 25 November – Refugee Reality

  • 18:30 at 46/3001, Physics Building, Highfield Campus
  • A panel event about the refugee crisis across the globe chaired by Ilaf Moslawy, medical student at Southampton and founder of Soton2Calais. Speakers include Dr Sarah Alhulail is a GP registrar who will Skype in from her volunteering trip in Greece, Waqar Shah is a medical student who completed a UNHCR internship at Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan this past summer, Ali Hashem is a Labour councillor in London, someone from Eastern Aleppo to Skype in, and someone to talk about the ecological reasons for migration. Followed by a panel discussion. Refreshments will be available.

Date TBA SUSU Amnesty Sleepout

  • Date and time TBA
  • A sleepout and vigil in aid of the refugees stranded in Europe. We invite everyone who is passionate about this cause to join, Amnesty member or not. With the demolition of the Calais Jungle completed the money we raise will be more important than ever.

Wednesday 30 November – Right to Healthcare for Refugees – Training

  • 19:00 at 58/1067, Murray Building, Highfield Campus
  • A session with the aims to understand the definition of: refugee, asylum seeker, undocumented migrant, refused asylum seeker, victim of trafficking & modern day slavery (MDS). Understand entitlement to the NHS. Be aware of the barriers that refugees and vulnerable migrants experience when accessing NHS care. Be aware of the ways to identify victims of trafficking & MDS. Understand the reasons why access to healthcare is important for refugees and vulnerable migrants. Aimed for medical students, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals but EVERYONE is welcome! Created by Doctors of The World and delivered by Medact Refugee Solidarity Group.
