Surge Radio set to broadcast live at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios
Surge Radio has been invited to broadcast at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios on Thursday 13 April.
Our student-run station is set to record between 12:00-16:00 on Thursday in a series of four live sessions, which students can listen to on the station’s website at www.surgeradio.co.uk. The broadcast will include live performances from Jerry Williams, a Portsmouth-based singer-songwriter and Will Joseph Cook, an indie solo artist with several million streams on Spotify.
The studio offered the station the broadcast in exchange for a ‘BTR (British Tape Recorder) Workhouse Tape Machine’ which the station had used at their previous studio at Glen Eyre Halls. Just four of the machines are said to exist today.
Surge Station Manager, Toby Leveson, comments, “It’s been really tough to keep this project a secret, but we’re so excited to spend the day at the legendary Abbey Road studios! We’re still amazed we stumbled into such a cool piece of Abbey Road history and the day at the studios themselves should be a great day for Surge as it is a massive opportunity for a little student radio station. Our team of volunteers have been working hard to get artists on board for live sessions and I’m delighted it’s all coming together well!”
Our Union President, Alex Hovden, adds “I’m so excited that Surge will get the chance to experience recording at Abbey Road. The studios are so iconic and as a life-long fan of The Beatles, I’m delighted that our members are able to have this incredible chance to broadcast at their former stomping ground. I would like to thank Abbey Road for giving our members this unique opportunity”.
The news comes just a few weeks after Surge, which has been running for 41 years, raised £863.40 for Comic Relief during their 48 hour broadcasting marathon, which involved playing a series of games, competitions and music to raise money for the charity.Tags: Abbey Road, broadcast, Comic Relief, Fundraising, LIVE, radio, Radio station, Student Media, student-run, Students Union, studios, Surge Radio, Surge Station Manager
