Southampton students, Joseph Lim and Sean Gilbody have been voted through to the semi-finals of the Chortle Student Comedy Awards 2017.

The students performed at the Southampton heat of the acclaimed awards in held at The Bridge on the 02 March.

President of our Comedy Society and Politics and Economics student, Sean Gilbody, won the heat, with Joseph Lim achieving the People’s Choice Award, securing them both places in the Awards semi-finals, held in London in May. The semi-finalists will battle it out at the finals at Pleasance One at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August in a bid to win £1,000 prize money, while the runner-up will take home £250.

The consolation prize isn’t bad either, with all finalists given the opportunity to play the Comedy Arena at Latitude Festival between 13-16 July, where industry figures will be present.

The awards, which have been running for fourteen years, are responsible for scouting some of the UK’s best young stand-up talent, including The Inbetweeners’ Simon Bird, Joe Lycett, Adam Hess and Jamali Maddix. The latter three comedians have gone onto perform on the BBC, as well as returning to their student roots as headliners at our very own Laughter Lounge!

We wish Sean and Joseph the very best of luck and will keep you updated with how they get on. If you’re interested in seeing more from the awards, check out our photo album from the Southampton heat and Chortle’s website for the latest news on the semi-finals.
