Freshers’ FAQ

In General

Reading Time: 4 minutes

With Freshers’ fast approaching, we’ve devised a list of frequently asked questions to clarify a few things – we hope you find it useful.

When does Freshers’ start?

We’re proud to offer not one, not two but three whole weeks of Freshers’! This begins on Welcome Weekend (Saturday 23 September/Sunday 24 September).

When do lectures begin?

Semester One starts on Thursday 28 September. You can find out all the key dates for the academic year here.

What’s the difference between the Master Pass and Variety Pass?

We’ve seen a few pages circulating social media claiming to offer ‘official’ Southampton Freshers’ tickets and passes. Our passes and tickets are the only official University of Southampton ones, and we can guarantee you a fantastic start to your student experience with them. We have two blog posts which explain what’s included in each pass. Have a read to decide what one suits you:

Why should I get involved in Freshers’?

Freshers’ events (both evening and daytime) are a great way for you to integrate with other students, make new friends and will generally help you settle into university life. With our passes and tickets, you’re guaranteed entry to top quality events, with live entertainment, student-friendly drink prices and more!

I’ll be studying at WSA, can I still get involved in the events at Highfield?

Of course! WSA students are welcome to join us at our Highfield events all year round.

Where do I buy my pass/ticket?

Head over to our Box Office website here.

Have Early Bird Master Passes sold out?

Yes, we’re afraid they have, but standard passes are still available for £85 on our Box Office.

When and where from do I collect my pass/ticket?

You can collect your Freshers’ tickets and passes (which is a wristband) from the Students’ Union during Welcome Weekend. Simply head over to the Box Office desk in Building 42, Highfield Campus.

Master Passes and individual tickets can also be collected from the WSA Café reception desk, but you will not be able to collect Variety Passes from here – you’ll need to go to the Box Office in Building 42 before your first event and collect it there.

If you’ll be collecting your pass/ticket from WSA, please remember to notify us of this when paying for it on the Box Office website. Don’t forget to bring your Student ID card when collecting passes and tickets.

Can I buy my Master Pass/Variety Pass/tickets once I’ve moved in/on the door?

We highly recommend buying your pass/tickets before you move in as events sell out quickly and we don’t want you to miss out on all the action!

Can I get a refund for a pass/ticket?

No, unfortunately we can’t process any refunds.

I bought a ticket for Welcome Party/U-Neon Party/Laughter Lounge but it’s not the one that the rest of my Halls are going to, what should I do?

If you buy a ticket for a Halls allocated event but then realise you selected the wrong date for your Halls, please email events@susu.org with your name, email address/phone number, order confirmation number and the date of the event you’d like to change it to.

Where can I find all the events and general information?

We post all our events and information on our official Freshers’ 17/18 Facebook page – simply give us a ‘Like’ here to stay in the loop.

Who’s performing at Freshers’ Ball?

We have an awesome line-up for you this year! We will be joined by:

What events are there in the daytime?

We have a range of fantastic things for you to get involved in during the day, including Meet the Hearing Dogs at our Highfield and WSA campuses, Freshers’ Fayre, Union Fayre, Bunfight (our clubs and societies fayre), Humans vs Zombies and International Welcome Fayre. For a full list of events, head over to the Freshers’ page. You can also view them on our website calendar here.

I want to join a club/society. How do I do this?

You can sign up to a club/society all year round, but Bunfight, our clubs and societies fayre on Wednesday 27 September, is your chance to find out more about what we have to offer and meet existing members. You can also click here to view the 300+ (yes, that many!) clubs and societies we have at the Union.

Is there a Facebook group to chat to other Freshers’?

Yep – you can talk to other soon-to-be students here.

Is there a Facebook group for my Halls?

Yes, there certainly is! Find yours below:

You can also take a 360° Halls tour here!

I’m interested in part-time work alongside my studies. Does the Union offer anything?

We recruit for a variety of positions including bar, shop, café and kitchen staff, as well as Brand Ambassadors who help us with our marketing and communications. Keep an eye on our Work With Us page here and our other social media channels.

We also have a range of exciting and unique voluntary and fundraising opportunities throughout the year offered by Raise and Give (RAG) – find out more here.

Where can I find out general Union information?

You can find out general news and information on our website, Highfield Facebook page and WSA Facebook page. We also offer email updates which are tailored to your interests – you can sign up here.

If your question wasn’t answered, or you would like us to explain something further, don’t hesitate to drop us a line over on our Freshers’ page, or on Twitter.

We look forward to meeting you all soon!
