Be Santa for the homeless this year by sending a Christmas shoebox to those in need through our Christmas Shoebox Appeal.

This Christmas we are working in partnership with Homed, one of our societies which supports homeless people living in Southampton, and Two Saints, a Southampton-based charity which supports the homeless and vulnerable. In this season of goodwill and gift-giving, we are giving back to the local community by preparing small boxes of essentials and gifts which would mean a great deal to those in need.

Some items to include in a shoebox may include:

  • Toiletries (shower gel, shampoo, lip balm, sanitary products, flannels…)
  • Household essentials (toilet roll, washing powder, washing-up liquid, tea towels…)
  • Treats and goodies! (chocolates, biscuits, notepads and pens, mobile phone chargers…)
  • Small items (hats/gloves/scarves, socks and underwear*, eye masks, ear plugs…)

Shoeboxes can be donated individually or as part of a group – maybe you would like to team up with your course mates or housemates? The budget and time commitment is completely up to you, but to give an insight as to what an average box costs: last year individuals spent an average of £10 per box, or £3 when the budget was split as a group.

You may also like to include a Christmas card in the box. For a lot of people who are homeless, Christmas is a particularly isolating time. It means a great deal to the people we support to know we are all thinking of them during the festive season.

Shoeboxes can be left in the red wheelie bin on the concourse of Building 42 from 15:00 today (you have until the Christmas holidays to donate a box)

Small bags can be used if you can’t get hold of a shoebox.

*please note, any socks or underwear donated must be new with tags still attached. If you have any questions about what to donate, don’t hesitate to drop us a line at vpwelfare@susu.org
