Whole Lotta Love! Led Zeppelin Charity Showcase – Friday 09 February 2018

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Did you know rock royalty once took to the stage at the University of Southampton Students’ Union? 45 years ago, Led Zeppelin performed in Garden Court and we are celebrating this anniversary with a brilliant Charity Showcase!

Led Zeppelin performed a one-off gig at the Union in 1973 especially to gain an audible recording and footage of a live performance – Garden Court has some particularly good acoustics! Their main tour date in Southampton was at the Gaumont Theatre (now the Mayflower Theatre).

On Friday 09 February 2018, nine bands from the Union’s Live Music Society will be performing the same set list as Led Zeppelin, as well as additional tracks from their back catalogue. All ticket proceeds will go to Ovation, a charity which supports young musicians and provides them with a platform to get involved with making music. Deborah Bonham, rock and blues vocalist and Patron of Ovation, is the sister of John Bonham, the late drummer for Led Zeppelin, so this charity is a perfect choice. RAG will also be collecting for Ovation during the concert.

Ben Rowlinson, President of Live Music Society, comments: “Bringing such a unique event to students will be the culmination of a lot of hard work by our members at Live Music Society and by the Union. We’re really excited to be performing such influential songs in the same venue as that legendary original gig. This will be the first time we have worked with Ovation; we hope it can be the start of a long and fruitful relationship between our two groups.”

Evie Reilly, VP Democracy and Creative Industries, comments: “The showcase will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate rock legends playing at Southampton and raise money for Ovation, a brilliant charity. A huge well done to LiveSoc for organising the event – it’s set to be a great night!”
