Clubs and Societies: Explained
You’ve arrived at University of Southampton, and you want to try something new – but with 300+ societies offered here at the Students’ Union it can get a little confusing. Whether it’s our sustainability groups that spark your interest, charity societies or creative industries, there is a club or society for everyone! We’ve put together this handy guide of what to expect from at Bunfight on Wednesday 26 September, 2018…
Performing Arts
Performing Arts encompasses all of our performance societies. They fall into four categories: Theatrical, Dance, Music and Technical. There is no need to be a West End singer or dancer to join; every society will help you learn new skills, become confident, and most importantly, to enjoy yourself! So if you love Pitch Perfect or dream of being on Strictly, this is the place for you.

Media
Fancy yourself as the next Spielberg or Louis Theroux? Discover the media world through our own radio, TV station and paper publications.
Our award-winning SUSUtv produces short films, support fundraising actions and covers local events.
Surge Radio broadcasts its shows throughout campus – keep an eye out for their stall throughout Freshers’! If you want to get your voice heard, this is the place to go.
As our leading entertainment publication, The Edge is always looking for film and music lovers with an opinion. This is your chance to interview stars, review shows and get involved in show business!
If you would rather showcase your writing abilities on a broader spectrum, Wessex Scene is our nationally recognised publication written and edited by students, for students.
Sports
With over 90 sports clubs, you can try out Korfball, Ju-jitsu, Angling, Snowboarding and so much more! You can represent us nationally in BUCS competitions with your team, or just get together with your mates for a casual five-a-side at Wide Lane. The first few weeks will be free, so give everything a try and don’t worry about membership just yet!
The AU Sports Taster weekend is on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September 2018. Come along and try the different clubs available to you. If you can’t make it, don’t worry! Most clubs hold other taster sessions in the first month, and you can join whenever you wish throughout the year – just contact each club through Facebook or their website.

Raise and Give
RAG (Raise and Give) is our major fundraising department who have raised over half a million pounds in the last few years. Every year they run a huge variety of events to support a selection of charities, voted for by you.
But it’s not just about raising money for good causes… It’s about doing it in as many different and unique ways as possible! From organising a local music festival to hitch-hiking around the world, your ideas are welcome. For more information, visit: Southampton RAG
MedSoc
With over 1,400 members, MedSoc is one of our largest societies. Every medical student at the University is automatically a member of MedSoc, which acts as an umbrella society for everything a medical student could need. Whether it’s trying out a new sport, or learning about medical career opportunities, MedSoc have it covered. Plus they host fantastic social events throughout the year!
