Jailbreak: What’s it all about?
You’ve probably heard it mentioned by now, the annual fundraising hitchhike organised by our amazing RAG has seen previous year’s volunteers reach Dubai, Morocco and Hong Kong. Jailbreak is one of the most exciting charity events you can get involved in but how does it all work? ๐บโ๏ธ
It’s simple. Groups of 2 or 3 compete in a race against time to get as far away from Southampton as possible, without spending any of their own money. This year, groups are raising money for three charities, Yellow Door, Anthony Nolan and Help Refugees. Each group must raise an initial ยฃ50 per person minimum in order to get involved. Don’t let this put you off, RAG provide groups with their own handy fundraising volunteers. Veterans in the fundraising game, their only job is to help groups achieve their targets so they can take part.
The Rules:
- You can’t spend your own money on transport.
- You must stay with your team at all times.
- You must keep in contact with RAG every 2 hours.
- Don’t break the law.
- Be clear when collecting money. It’s important to clarify between charitable donations and contributions to travel.
- Any charitable donations MUST go to charity.

Last year an incredible 75 people take part and they travelled a total of 21, 897 miles. Of course, fancy dress is encouraged and there is a number of challenges to get involved in along the way along with titles up for grabs including, best video, best tweet, most obscure transport and most directionally impaired team. If you’re taking part and looking for some handy tips, including what to bring with you and advice on getting back home again, you can watch RAG’s live stream of their Jailbreak meeting here.
This year’s Jailbreak is will begin this Saturday, 24th November, with teams setting off at 8 AM from the Redbrick. You can keep up with the adventures on the Jailbreak Southampton Facebook page or by following #sotonjailbreak on Twitter.
