Remember, You Are More Than Your Studies

In What's on

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Our You Are More Than campaign is back for January 2019. We have lots of activities planned, including free exercise sessions, and the best news of all… the Hearing Dogs are back! You can also grab some free soup and take advantage of our study and chill out spaces.

Studying is important but we would like to encourage everyone to keep your study habits healthy – this means remembering to take lots of breaks, eat healthily, exercise, and look after your mental health.

Please note that the availability of the dogs can change at the last minute, and as such any timings are subject to revision.

tw: suicide, mental health
We have partnered up with 5 aside CHESS to bring their Chess and Chat bus to the University of Southampton.
“5asideCHESS is tackling loneliness and social isolation and the mental health problems they often cause! We get people together, get them engaged and get them talking – all through the tool of our ice-breaker 5asideCHESS – bringing about positive change and connectivity in a world where so many lives are lived online. The bus also acts as a moving memorial wall with people writing messages on the bus to loved ones lost to suicide.”

ENABLING SERVICES
During You Are More Than this January, the University’s Enabling Services team are running a number of fantastic workshops to help you de-stress and manage your studies.

Hypnosis for Exam Success
“Exam stress and anxiety are normal processes but sometimes they can be overwhelming and may prevent you from accomplishing your goals. This hypnosis taster session will help you learn how to take more control over your anxiety and prepare for success in those exams. Transferable skills for future anxiety management will also be covered. Join us in a relaxed environment to learn more about hypnosis and its benefits.”
Sessions are on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 January in the Enabling Wellbeing Centre (28 University Road) 13:30 – 15:00.
Sign up for Thursday’s session here.

PGR Conversation Group
“We know that studying for a PhD can be tough and sometimes you might need to step away from it and reconnect with others. The conversation group is an intimate group that aims to enable doctoral researchers to make meaningful connections with each other in a safe environment.
Facilitated by Toni Kippenberger, a counsellor from Enabling Services, the group will give you the opportunity to discuss issues which really matter to you.
These could be issues that you might not necessarily want to share with your supervisors or departmental colleagues; perhaps they are issues that are emotionally charged or just a little sensitive. Whatever it is, come and tell us. We’re here to help.”

PGR Conversation Groups will re-start on Thursday 31 January and run weekly every Thursday until Thursday 14 March.

You will be required to attend the group for 1.5 hours each week for the full six sessions.
For more information or to register for this conversational group, please email Enabling Services at enable@soton.ac.uk or call Enabling Services on 023 8059 7726. You could also contact the team on Live Chat on weekdays between 14:00 and 16:00.
