You Are More Than Your Studies: What help is available?

As a Students’ Union, mental health and wellbeing is so important to us. SUSU, as well as University of Southampton, have a number of services available to every student. We would like to take this You Are More Than Your Studies to remind you of these. 

Whether you need some support, would like to get involved or just need some more info we’ve got it all below. 

The Advice Centre

The Advice Centre, located in Building 40, provides free, independent and confidential support to all students. They can help you with issues that could be impacting your mental health such as, finance, housing or academic issues. They also run a ‘look after your mate’ training service which allows you to be better equipped with the skills required to support your friend through tough times whilst teaching you how to look after yourself when you are helping someone else.

Your VP Welfare

Your VP Welfare’s responsibilities include lead on action to do with Welfare issues and promoting student well-being. Isabella supports political and social awareness and campaign for societies, and faith groups and help to run political, environmental and ethical campaigns and supports student-run self-help groups (e.g. Nightline, and peer-to-peer groups). Isabella also represents your views to the University and beyond so get in contact if you’ve got some great ideas on welfare! 

Nightline 

Southampton Nightline is a confidential listening and information service run entirely by students, for students. If you’re worried, homesick or stressed you can give them a call between 20:00 – 8:00 or they have a chat online option from 8:00 – 1:00

Mind Society

Mind Society gathers students who are “passionate about campaigning on behalf of Mind, the mental health charity.”

Mind Society

They fundraise throughout the year and all proceeds gathered go directly to Solent Mind, the charity’s Hampshire branch. They also volunteer with Mind’s national campaigns such as the Virgin London Marathon.

The Mind Society have created a number of opportunities to fundraise for Mind including, cake sales, a Christmas card competition and Halloween pumpkin carving sessions. They also run events such as Tea and Talk throughout the year.

Student Minds

The Uni’s branch of Student Minds. These guys run support sessions for students, aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and run campaigns for mental well being.

Student Minds Society

During term time they regularly work to raise awareness and run weekly ‘positive mind groups’ to support students through low mood or mild depression.

University of Southampton

Need to talk to someone? As a part of Student Services, the University of Southampton’s Enabling Services provides a wide variety of support for students who have disabilities, mental health conditions and/or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. They provide confidential support to all students for those dealing with mental health issues and when appropriate, will advise you to contact services provided through the NHS, while in others cases we will suggest support provided through the University. They also have a number of self-help options which are available here.

Student life are dedicated to supporting student wellbeing and enhancing the student experience. They’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Student Life are based within Halls of Residence and support all University of Southampton students.
