A Spotlight On Sustainability

Over the past few months SUSU has made some fantastic steps towards becoming a more sustainable organisation. On Wednesday 04 December we are holding a Sustainability Spotlight in Building 42 to celebrate and inform students of the good work already taking place, and look to the future to see what more we can achieve.

On the day there will be talks in The Cube, a sustainability fair, and a networking event and Q&A with industry experts.

Reindeer to visit Highfield Campus!

We don’t think there’s a better way to get into the festive spirit than by meeting Santa’s very own reindeer! 🎅🏽🦌

Come along to the Redbrick on Tuesday 03 December between 11:00 – 15:00 to meet them before they’re needed to deliver everybody’s presents! 🎁 (oh, and they’re bringing their little owl friend, too 🦉)

From Monday 25 November to Sunday 01 December it’s Women in Sport Week at SUSU! This week focuses on celebrating the women in our sports teams and encouraging anyone who might not already be involved in sports to try something new.

SUSU Votes to Support UCU Strike Action

In News

You will be aware that from Monday 25 November to Wednesday 4 December, members of UCU will be taking strike action, following a ballot of their members. SUSU’s stance on major issues affecting the academic experience like this is decided by our members following democratic procedures and so the question was taken to our AGM today.

With a result of 64% of those voting in favour of the strike action, SUSU will now be supporting the strike action.

SUSU and University Release Joint Sustainability Statement

SUSU and the University of Southampton have released a joint statement of intent on our commitment to sustainability, minimising our impact on global ecological destruction and stabilising climate change.

  • We commit to prioritising together sustainable actions to address urgent environmental issues using the passion, creativity and scholarship of our students and staff to find new, lasting solutions.
  • The whole University community will work together to slow significantly and ultimately minimise our impact on the environment.

Male Suicide Prevention Event

Content Warning – Suicide

On Thursday 28 November 84 pairs of shoes will be placed in the centre of the redbrick to represent the average of 84 men who take their own lives each week in the UK.

On behalf of the charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), leaflets and information will be provided at the protest with the aim of helping those suffering from poor mental health or who might be considering suicide. SUSU to host event discussing UCU Strike Action

In General

An event is being hosted from 3pm on Friday 15 October in the concourse (reception area of building 42) looking at the UCU (University and College Union) and why they have decided to take 8 days of strikes from the 25 November.

This will be attended by UCU members working at the University and will be aimed at helping you understand why industrial action is happening and how it might affect you. The event will be an open forum with a Q&A.
