All Student Vote – The Result
Firstly, we would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in this All Student Vote about the upcoming industrial strike action.
2,541 students voted. The voting breakdown is as follows:
I would like SUSU to support the cause and the action – 37%
I would like SUSU to support the cause but not the action – 35%
I do not want SUSU to support the cause or the action – 28%
This result has given us a clear mandate to support the strike action. Despite this, neither of the support options got 50%, or any clear majority, which means there is not a definitive mandate for exactly how students would like us to support the strike action. In short, as there was no clear winner but there was a clear majority overall to support we will be following through with the actions for the ‘Support cause but not action’ option, as they were the common denominator for both support options. This means that:
- Providing space for UCU teach outs and other activity
- Sharing information and communication in support of the strikes and on behalf of UCU
- Lobbying the University in support of the strikes
However, as there was not enough clear support for the ‘Support cause and action’ option, we will not:
- Withdraw Sabbatical Officers from University meetings
- Attend the picket lines during working hours
We do recognise that some students will be negatively affected during the strike action and, despite our stance in support of this, we will still work to support all students throughout this time. If you are experiencing any issues, you can find details of all of our support services here. This includes access to our Advice Centre, which provides free, independent and confidential practical advice on academic issues, housing and finance 09:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday.
