Taekwondo Club Place Second Overall in BUCS Championships!

Congratulations to our Taekwondo Club who placed second overall in the first ever BUCS Taekwondo Championships!

On their winning announcement on Facebook, SUTKD said:
“The team spirit at this competition was through the roof. It’s great to have ex members still coming to support SUTKD at these events – Man Fai Ng and Rhys Thomas – and thank you for helping out on the day with helping with match numbers and cheering competitors in the ring.”

Table Tennis Men’s Second Team Win the Conference Cup!

Congratulations to our Table Tennis Club Men’s 2nd team, who played Bristol’s 2nd team on Wednesday 11 March in the Conference Cup finals and won with a score of 14 – 3!

Our Men’s teams have now won the Conference Cup for two consecutive years! Next year, both teams (1st and 2nd) will be playing in the National Trophy where the competition will be even harder.

SUSU Award Ceremonies To Go Ahead Online

The Academic Awards 2020 and our first Society and Volunteering Awards will still be celebrated later this year! Although we are disappointed we can’t hold our award ceremonies on campus, we still want to celebrate all the fantastic nominations we’ve received.

£10,000 Funding Secured for Humanities Textbooks

Jo Lisney (VP Education and Democracy) and Hartley Library have successfully secured £10,000 for additional Humanities textbooks.

Humanities students can request any books/textbooks they need via the library, and can then borrow them as many times as they need to.

Jo says: “We’ve received a lot of feedback through SSLCs and student surveys about there not being enough copies of Humanities textbooks for students to access – whether that’s due to cost or availability.
SUSU and UoS have heard this and have worked together to secure £10,000 so students can use this fund to offset the cost of their core … Read the rest

Our Response to Coronavirus Related Racism

Last week the University were informed of a racially motivated attack on Chinese students outside of their accommodation, which was also reported by the Daily Echo here. SUSU has a zero tolerance approach to racism, and we have been working with the University in our capacity to support the students affected. The University have been working with the Leader of Southampton City Council and the Chinese Association of Southampton. Today, they published their response here.

Update on Upcoming SUSU Events

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, we have made the decision to cancel all of our upcoming large-scale events taking place this Summer term

This includes AU Ball, WSA Ball, Academic Awards, Society & Volunteering Awards and Grad Ball.  We are sorry for any disappointment caused but this is the most suitable course of action at this time.

Boat Club Success with Fundraiser at Karaoke

Congratulations to SUBC who raised £131.64 for Prostate Cancer UK at their Karaoke takeover last week. They had previously asked people to dress up in blue when attending the event to show solidarity.

The club also plan to ‘March for Men‘, a 50km walk from the Boat Club to Bournemouth Beach during March. The fundraiser has currently raised 25% of its £2500 target and if you would like to donate you can do here.
