Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Month

May saw Mental Health Awareness Week but did you know that this coincides with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Awareness Month? BPD is also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) and it was not until 1980 that it was officially recognized in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III). For this month, our VP Welfare and Community spoke to a student who has BPD, and heard their experiences of it.

Canoe Club Raise £1,000 for Southampton Samaritans and Rennie Grove Hospice Care

Southampton University Canoe Club (SUCC) have raised £905.00 (increasing to £1,038 with Gift Aid) for Southampton Samaritans and Rennie Grove Hospice Care – huge well done to everyone involved!

To encourage donations 66 members of SUCC walked, ran or cycled a collective distance of over 5,000km in 2 weeks – over three times their original target distance! The original target of 1661km is the distance to Glen Etive and back, where the team would have been heading for a week long trip until it was cancelled due to Coronavirus.

Defeat the cheat! Say no to essay mills

As we all get used to new ways of working and studying online it’s important to remember the rules around academic integrity. Companies are making money from students tempted to pay someone else to write their essays, particularly in this current crisis. It’s important to ‘defeat the cheat’ and say no to these essay mills.

To ensure academic integrity in your work, follow our three steps:
Write it: make sure it’s all your own work.
Reference it: correctly credit your sources.
Report it: call out companies trying to sell essays to students.

Ladies Lacrosse Club Fundraise £1,900 for NHS Charities Together

Southampton University Ladies Lacrosse Club (SULLC) have run over 1600km in their ‘Run the Length of the UK’ challange in April, and have managed to raise a brilliant total of £1,930 for NHS Charities Together!

SULLC decided for their fundraising challenge to collectively run the length of the UK, from John O’Groats in Scotland to Southampton, over 11 days. The club provided updates on their virtual location along with some great images saying hello from where they would be!

Our Response to Racist Incident

We have been made aware of an incident of targeted racism that occurred during the collaborative workshop with Wessex Scene and Ashamed, held on Zoom last week.

We are appalled to hear this has happened so blatantly. We understand that, although this was extreme, our students of colour continue to experience racism in many forms generally. Cricket Club Raise Over £4,800 for Southampton Hospitals Charity

Southampton University Cricket Club (SUCC) have raised an incredible £4,826.61 for Southampton Hospitals Charity! Over two weeks 70 members of SUCC (past and present) ran the distance to Poreč in Croatia and back again – a total of 3070.62km.

After quickly reaching their initial goal of £1,500, SUCC raised the target to £2,000… then £3,000… then £3,500, and they have still raised well over that by the end of their challange.

Suggest a Core Charity for RAG 2020-21

Which charities should RAG support this year?

Every year Southampton RAG chooses a local, national and international charity to be their core charities of the year. Whilst RAG fundraise for dozens of charities, the money raised from core events like Jailbreak and Big Give Week will be divided between these chosen charities.

This year RAG has supported Medecins Sans Frontieres (international charity), Alzheimer’s Society (national charity), Solent Mind (local charity) and Naomi House & Jacksplace (local charity – Winchester).
