Our Response to Online Racist Incident

In News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

SUSU was recently made aware of a small number of racist submissions made to the RAG (Raise and Give) sign-up form for a fundraising activity in support of Stop Hate UK, an organisation working to challenge all forms of hate crime and discrimination. Both SUSU and RAG condemn these submissions in the strongest possible terms; the views expressed in them are completely unacceptable and against our fundamental values. We immediately conducted an investigation and reported the incident to the Police and the University.

As a result of our investigation, we would strongly recommend that all clubs and societies in future use the Microsoft Forms software available to all students to ensure all submissions are fully trackable. Because the submissions in this case were made using Google Forms, it has not been possible for us to confirm the identity of the individuals responsible, however we continue to support the Police with their enquiries.

If anyone has any further information or queries regarding this matter, please contact president@soton.ac.uk in confidence to discuss it. The Sabbatical Officers and SUSU are actively committed to challenging all forms of discrimination and hate speech within the student body and the wider community.

If you want to support RAG in their fundraiser for Stop Hate UK, please follow their fundraiser online for more information.
