In collaboration with the University’s Office for the Development of Alumni Relations, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal. The aim of the appeal is to raise money to help students continue participating in sports to the fullest extent possible during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a normal year, the Students’ Union is able to give a reasonable amount of funding to our sports clubs, allowing them to compete against other universities in competitions such as BUCS and to be able to afford coaching and equipment. Unfortunately, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic has closed our commercial outlets, such as The Stags, for almost half a year which has reduced the amount money we have to fund our sports clubs by over a half. This means current students are unable to enjoy the sporting opportunities which we have been able to provide for previous generations, resulting in a 30% reduction in the number of students taking part in sport at a time when the huge postive benefits of participating in sport for physical and mental health couldn’t be more important.

For any of our clubs to receive the money raised, we need to raise at least £15,000. Whether you are in a position to donate or can help us in other ways such as sharing this project with your friends, family and colleagues, your help will be invaluable in us being able to continue to provide opportunities for students to get involved in sport despite the pandemic.
