Union President: Statement on the recent events in Afghanistan
On behalf of everyone at SUSU, our Union President, Ben Dolbear, has shared the statement below regarding the recent events in Afghanistan:
As an organisation that challenges discrimination and prejudice in all its forms, striving to be a force for good for both students and wider society, all of us at SUSU would like to express our outrage and sadness at the rapidly unfolding events in Afghanistan. Above all else, we believe that access to a good education, regardless of gender identity, is a human right, and we utterly reject the Taliban’s archaic and misogynistic steps to restrict opportunities for women and girls.
For any of our members who have been affected by the events of the past weeks, we would like to remind you of the free, independent, and confidential advice and information that is available through our Advice Centre, reachable by phone: 023 8059 2085, or email: advice@susu.org. We encourage our members to review the support document relating to the situation in Afghanistan, released by the University on 18th August 2021, and the UK Government has launched a crisis line for any British nationals and non-British nationals currently in Afghanistan.
We are in the process of proactively contacting all clubs and societies whose members may be affected by the situation in Afghanistan, and we will decide how best to support them in due course.
Furthermore, we are committing to organising a fundraiser in the coming months to support the education of women and girls in Afghanistan, and would encourage all members and organisations interested in collaborating with us on this project to reach out to me at president@soton.ac.uk.
