It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room. Some people feel uncomfortable or embarrassed talking about mental health illness, others labour under the notion that it’s a rare and obvious illness to have – we need to address that.

This week we’re launching our Mental Health campaign. Mental Health affects millions of people across the country, with 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. The overall number of people with mental health problems has not changed significantly in recent years, but worries about things like money, jobs and benefits can make it harder for people to cope. Our campaign aims to both support our members if they so need, and to make our members aware of mental health.

On the 6th May the Captains of the Sports Groups will be attending the National Student Minds and BUCS pilot programme which aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and what sports teams can do to facilitate any issues for their members. The session is from 1pm-3pm in SUSU, after this session the Captains will meet in the Concourse to launch the start of the Elephant in the Room campaign.

Voter registration countdown!

With less than a week left for people to get registered to vote ahead of the General Election, we are urging you to make sure your voice is heard on 7 May and register at www.gov.uk/registertovote. 20 April will be people’s last chance to get registered so that they can vote in the General Election.

What’s this immunology centre all about then?

You may have heard about the new campaign by the University of Southampton to help cure cancer. Their aim is to crowd fund £25m to open a new state-of-the-art Centre for Cancer Immunology by 2017. They aim to develop immunotherapy to revolutionise the way we cure cancer.

Uni students help local kids to Branch Up!

Students here at SUSU have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for activity days for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Southampton Hub has recently launched their Branch Up programme, which aims to provide activity days to children in the local area. These children will be partnered on a one-to-one basis with student volunteers from the University of Southampton, with the first activity day taking place on Saturday 14 March. Branch Up was originally set up by students in Oxford and has recently expanded to Southampton and London.

The cure for cancer? You’re it.

The University of Southampton has always been at the cutting edge of leading scientific research, and now they need your help. They’re currently campaigning to fund the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in Europe. The University currently leads the UK in cancer immunology research, and their discoveries are already making a huge difference to people with cancer.

They’re aiming to raise £25m to open a state-of-the-art Cancer Immunology centre by 2017, which would be located at Southampton General Hospital and partnered with the planned Francis Crick Centre in London (which is a major international hub for biomedical research).
