Volunteering: How can you help?

In Features

Our VP Activities and Volunteering and Fundraising Officer have put together a list of ways you can volunteer during this crisis, while still maintaining social distancing. Volunteering can be a great way to feel productive and make yourself socialise if you’re feeling lonely. But, there is absolutely no requirement or moral pressure to volunteer if you do not have the emotional, mental or physical capacity to do so. You’re allowed to use this time just for you, and staying inside will help lots of people too!

Follow Government advice at all times

No matter what volunteering you are doing … Read the rest

Be Santa for the Homeless with our Christmas Shoebox Appeal

In What's on

Be Santa for the homeless this year by sending a Christmas shoebox to those in need through our Christmas Shoebox Appeal.

This Christmas we are working in partnership with Homed, one of our societies which supports homeless people living in Southampton, and Two Saints, a Southampton-based charity which supports the homeless and vulnerable. In this season of goodwill and gift-giving, we are giving back to the local community by preparing small boxes of essentials and gifts which would mean a great deal to those in need.

Some items to include in a shoebox may include:

Student Volunteering Week: Students explain why they give up their time to volunteer

In General

Student Volunteering Week is well underway this week. On Monday and Tuesday, we offered opportunities to meet charities and pick the brains of our student volunteers on the Concourse. As we gather our marigolds and bin bags ready for today’s Community Clear Up at Portswood Recreation Ground, we caught up with some of our members to ask them what they get out of volunteering their time.

Volunteering can add something to your social lives as a hobby as well as being an activity that can enhance your CV.

Rugby Football Club promote the Look After Your Mate campaign and show their softer side

In General

What would you think if we asked you – what are Rugby Football players like?

You might perhaps imagine 15 oversized, hairy and muddy men in the field of play? Do you hear their low grunts or maybe wince at the thought of bone crunching tackles? Does it conjure thoughts of wasted exertion in fruitless pursuit of an oval ball?

Well, if that is what you thought you couldn’t be more wrong.

Why?

Well, on an unprepossessing and grey day all the way back in December, men and women from our Rugby Football Club volunteered to pitch up on … Read the rest
