Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal

In collaboration with the University’s Office for the Development of Alumni Relations, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal. The aim of the appeal is to raise money to help students continue participating in sports to the fullest extent possible during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a normal year, the Students’ Union is able to give a reasonable amount of funding to our sports clubs, allowing them to compete against other universities in competitions such as BUCS and to be able to afford coaching and equipment. SUSU Secures Funding for Online Learning

UPDATE: As of 17:00 on Thursday 07 May 2020 the Online Learning Grant will be closed to new applications. If you have already submitted an application, this will still be processed and you will receive an outcome via email within 10 working days. The Online Learning Grant has received a very high level of applications and has provided funding to over 1200 students.

SUSU have worked with the University to successfully secure a fund for students to buy equipment and other products you may need to enable you to study from home!

£10,000 Funding Secured for Humanities Textbooks

Jo Lisney (VP Education and Democracy) and Hartley Library have successfully secured £10,000 for additional Humanities textbooks.

Humanities students can request any books/textbooks they need via the library, and can then borrow them as many times as they need to.

Jo says: “We’ve received a lot of feedback through SSLCs and student surveys about there not being enough copies of Humanities textbooks for students to access – whether that’s due to cost or availability.
SUSU and UoS have heard this and have worked together to secure £10,000 so students can use this fund to offset the cost of their core … Read the rest

Southampton University Glider Club get a New Glider!

SUSU have purchased a brand new glider for Southampton University Glider Club (SUGC) as part of our capital grants funding. We are committed to improving the experience of all our sports clubs – we hope the new glider will help SUGC members enjoy soaring through the skies and developing their skills.

The new glider will be run and maintained by SUGC from their base at the Shalbourne Gliding Club. It also has the tail letters ‘SU’ as a nod to our investment!

Funding Granted for Clay Pigeon Shooting Club

SUSU have awarded a grant to University of Southampton Clay Pigeon Shooting Club (SUCPSC) for the purchase of four new sporting shotguns. Running for three years, SUCPSC is one of our newer sports clubs and we hope the new equipment will help their club continue to grow.

What is clay pigeon shooting?

Established in 2017, SUCPSC is a society for anyone interested in clay pigeon shooting. No gun, licence or previous experience is required. They shoot every two weeks at one of many local grounds with socials in-between.

ACCC Receive £3,000 Grant from Sport England

Our Athletics and Cross Country Club (ACCC) recently applied to Sport England for a grant of £3,561 – we are thrilled to report this application was successful!

The funding will be used for new indoor high jump mats and an indoor shot put throwing circle platform.

Jon Pairman, President of ACCC, says: “This equipment is essential for athletics training during the winter and when the weather is poor. Currently the only athletics track in Southampton closes off the high jump mats when the weather is poor, so for the entirety of September through to March/April we cannot train for high jump … Read the rest

Funding approved for the Photographic Society, Water Polo Club and Sub-Aqua Club

Did you know that your affiliated club or society can apply for funding from the Union? This funding isn’t designed to cover the day-to-day running costs of the group (this should be covered by membership fees, fundraising or from other sources) but it can be provided to cover the costs of resources, specific pieces of equipment or trips that wouldn’t otherwise be able to be provided.

Union Southampton’s Ladies Football Club (SULFC) offers free football coaching for local schoolchildren

We are delighted to announce that Ladies Football Club (SULFC) have begun to to deliver free football to local schoolchildren across Southampton.
The outreach programme is designed to encourage the club to expand their football provision internally and out to the community. Eleven members of SULFC are signed up to the programme, which is open to Key Stage 2 girls at three local Southampton Primary schools: Bassett Green, Bitterne Manor and Beechwood Junior. All sessions are free for students to attend and are run as after-school clubs.

Enterprise Fund – 11 applications submitted

The Union Enterprise Fund exists to help you fund original and innovative events, activities and projects. After receiving an incredible 11 submissions showcasing your great ideas, we are in the process of choosing the most deserving idea for the £500 investment – and as you can see, it is proving quite a challenge:

Applicant 1: The Charge Project, is a solar energy distribution service that will operate in the ultra-poor river islands of Bangladesh. The Charge Project will comprise of a boat network with solar panel arrays mounted to the roof, which will be used to charge battery boxes.
