Last Wednesday was a great night, with lots of people gathering in The Bridge to find out the anticipated results of the Halls Committee elections. Every Halls of residence at University of Southampton (including private rented) has their own Halls Committee (formerly known as JCRs), to ensure that students are given the support they need in their first year.
What roles can I run for?
Each Halls (including Private rented) has the following roles:
- President
- Secretary
- Welfare and Campaigns Officer
- Sports Officer
- Fundraising and Volunteering Officer
- Events and Activities Officer
- Communities Officer

The Students’ Union is full of weird and fun facts that you may have never known about…until now!
- Let’s start with one of our favourites…we have our own cat called Susu!
Susu is a stray cat who has adopted the Students’ Union at Highfield as her home – you can often see her chilling on the sofas by The Cube being cuddled by students.
- In preparation for Freshers’, we ordered over 7,000 pot noodles to give away to this year’s intake!
True story – don’t say we don’t spoil you.

SUSU is rolling out a series of free training events aimed at building the skills you need to succeed in a student leadership role. The programme, called Your Skills, is a selection of fun and informal workshops that you can book in to, to help you develop in the areas where you would like to be stronger.
With such diverse training schemes as ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy (Stress Management), Express Yourself (Communication & Interpersonal Skills) and Pushy or Pushover (Assertiveness Skills) SUSU is set to give you the leg up you need to navigate your way to success.

The Private Rented JCR are a group of students who are there to organise events and build community between students who don’t live in halls.
In the past, this has meant that students who choose not to live in halls during their first year could still meet lots of other first year students – but now we’re extending that to all students!
It’s easy to miss out on the community that living in Halls brings, so now any student can buy the Private Rented JCR pack!
