New session to help students with assertiveness

On Wednesday 5 February we will be hosting a special Your Skills assertiveness workshop. This unique session aims to help students use a range of interpersonal and personal skills so that they can confidently assert their needs.

The session is open to all student volunteers, from course representatives to JCRs – everyone is welcome!

The event is taking place from 2-4pm in Meeting Room 1 Level 2, Building 42 with VP Democracy and Creative Industries, David Martin.  Bookings close for this session today at 4pm. To book your place, click here.

Your Skills is back!

SUSU’s unique training programme Your Skills is returning this term with loads more great sessions to help you gain essential skills for your development.

The useful sessions are open to all student volunteers, from course representatives to JCRs – everyone is welcome!

Led by trained members of staff, all the sessions are fun and interactive using a variety of techniques, designed to prepare you with all that you need for your volunteering role.

One month to go to spring elections!

Nominations for spring elections open in one month on Friday 7 February at 12pm. The nominations will then close on Monday 17 February.

Voting takes place between Monday 24 and Friday 28 February (week 22) and the results will be announced on Friday at a special Results Night ceremony, starting at 7pm in the Cube.

70 positions are up for election, from President of the Union to Union Councillors.

Up for grabs are seven full-time (sabbatical) positions, and 63 part-time positions – Student Leaders, student trustees and Union Councillors – you can find out more about the positions here.… Read the rest

Students go crazy for Christmas Ball

SUSU are pleased to announce a record amount of interest has been received for the Christmas Ball. The festive event is all set to be the biggest ball SUSU has done in years and the biggest event ever organised by the JCRs. Tickets went on sale on Monday 11th November at midday but an extra 500 had to be released on Friday 16th when the event approached capacity. By the next Monday 1400 tickets had been sold, just seven days after they went on sale.

Get set for JCR Halls Committee elections

We’re pleased to announce there have been a record number of nominations for your JCR Halls Committees.  A grand total of 139 students will be running for positions on JCRs, with 9 students competing in a presidential race for the Archers Road Halls.

Commenting on the election turnout Union President David Gilani said, “It’s fantastic to see so many new students putting themselves forward into these leadership positions. It shows a real enthusiasm to make a difference and I wish all the candidates the best of luck.”

JCR Elections Nominations Now Open!

Nominations are now open for elections to your JCR Halls Committees!

Being on your JCR is a great way to get involved in life in halls, running events and looking after the welfare of your fellow students.  You’ll gain loads of useful skills for the future, as well as having an amazing time making life in halls awesome!

Each of the 10 JCRs has 7 positions available, covering a range of areas from running the JCR as President to being responsible for intra-mural sports as the Sports Officer.

No Halls? No problem!

In General

The Private Rented JCR are a group of students who are there to organise events and build community between students who don’t live in halls.

In the past, this has meant that students who choose not to live in halls during their first year could still meet lots of other first year students – but now we’re extending that to all students!

It’s easy to miss out on the community that living in Halls brings, so now any student can buy the Private Rented JCR pack!
