Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal

In collaboration with the University’s Office for the Development of Alumni Relations, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal. The aim of the appeal is to raise money to help students continue participating in sports to the fullest extent possible during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a normal year, the Students’ Union is able to give a reasonable amount of funding to our sports clubs, allowing them to compete against other universities in competitions such as BUCS and to be able to afford coaching and equipment. Women in Sport Week: Laura’s Story

This week is Women in Sport Week, an annual week with free sports taster sessions, guest speakers and sport challenges to break down barriers, challenge gender stereotypes and celebrate our amazing women in sport. This is Laura’s story. 

Laura’s first taste of martial arts was in her local karate hall in rural Essex where there was just seven other members, three of them members of her own family and also two 80-year-old men. “I didn’t get the best experience of martial arts and defending myself ” smiles Laura. “Even though I felt capable, I don’t think I actually was.” Read the rest

Southampton Sharks shoot hoops with The GROW Project

Chris Conti and Simeon Superville, from our very own Southampton Sharks (SUBC), ran a fantastic basketball activity session for five members of The GROW Project last Friday. The GROW Project is an innovative charity committed to bringing day services to adults with physical and learning disabilities in Southampton and Eastleigh. Once we heard that several of their members were interested in basketball, the Sharks jumped at the opportunity to help!

Funding approved for the Photographic Society, Water Polo Club and Sub-Aqua Club

Did you know that your affiliated club or society can apply for funding from the Union? This funding isn’t designed to cover the day-to-day running costs of the group (this should be covered by membership fees, fundraising or from other sources) but it can be provided to cover the costs of resources, specific pieces of equipment or trips that wouldn’t otherwise be able to be provided.

Union Southampton’s Ladies Football Club (SULFC) offers free football coaching for local schoolchildren

We are delighted to announce that Ladies Football Club (SULFC) have begun to to deliver free football to local schoolchildren across Southampton.
The outreach programme is designed to encourage the club to expand their football provision internally and out to the community. Eleven members of SULFC are signed up to the programme, which is open to Key Stage 2 girls at three local Southampton Primary schools: Bassett Green, Bitterne Manor and Beechwood Junior. All sessions are free for students to attend and are run as after-school clubs.

Our Boat Club are taking part in this year’s Spotify Soundclash, where as a student group, you can you create a Spotify playlist in a bid to gain as many followers as possible in order to win the grand prize of £10,000.

Society Spotlight on our Canoe Club

Earlier this month we interviewed committee members Nick (Kit Secretary), Rachel (Vice President) and Amy (Treasurer) of the Southampton University Canoe Club (SUCC). We spoke to them about what the club offers and the recent funding they received from the Union.

SUCC were recently granted extra funding by the Union which was greatly received by all club members. They were given £1,500 which has enabled them to purchase four brand new boats, and has helped fund their white water safety and rescue course which is designed to teach members safety procedures for residential trips. Trampolining Club Wins Seven Medals at the BUCS National Championships

Trampolining Club had a fantastic weekend in Sheffield at the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) National Championships, taking home an incredible seven medals including four golds and three bronzes across the synchronised, individual and team categories.

The club’s President Rhys Gray, was the golden boy, taking home the title of national champion for the second year running with a gold medal in the BUCS Elite Men’s category. Rhys also won another Gold medal as part of a team effort with Louis Lister and Joe Deevoy in the group category.
