SUSU donates record-breaking total to charity

SUSU has donated a record-breaking £235,313.63 to charity over the 2018-19 academic year! This total was achieved through student fundraising and SUSU’s Raise and Give (RAG) Group.

The donations have benefited over 35 charities including Help Refugees, Anthony Nolan, Yellow Door and Trinity Winchester. The total was raised through a variety of events and activities students could get involved with, such as mountain treks, bake sales, quiz nights, 10k runs and much more.

Statement regarding The Soton Tab

In General

The Soton Tab recently published an article regarding the death of a University of Southampton student. This article displays a complete lack of sensitivity on the subject, with no mention of support services for readers. 

The Union has received complaints from students, including submissions to You Make Change, and the article has received considerable backlash on social media.

Students have asked the Union to take action.  We have therefore contacted the national Tab directly and asked them to take down the article out of respect for the student, their family & friends, and all those affected by this tragic event.… Read the rest

MP signs Union letter to Home Office in appeal over student’s Visa issue

In News

VP Communities, Emily Harrison has met with Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, to discuss support for one of our students who is facing ‘significant Visa issues’.

Together with the University’s Vice President International, Emily is sending a letter to the Home Office to appeal on behalf of the student.

“The student first came to me a couple of weeks ago and I am delighted to have received such positive support from everyone I have reached out to in dealing with this case, including from Alan and the University,” says Emily.

SCA and SUSU launch Sexual Assault Survey

The Sexual Consent Awareness (SCA) society alongside SUSU, have recently launched a university wide survey to better understand sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape at the University.

The anonymous questionnaire looks to explore the need for “more adequate policies against sexual assault for students, more accessible support systems for students to access, and a harder line on condemning all forms of sexual assault and harassment at University.”

Jailbreak: What’s it all about?

What&Where success with Union Enterprise Funding

A local student start-up company What&Where recently won funding from the Union’s Enterprise Fund, enabling them to begin connecting students with local businesses and services.
