Our Sustainability Strategy 2020

Sustainability and green issues are increasingly urgent causes in our society and are heavily supported by young people.

At SUSU we believe in taking responsibility for our student and wider community and are proud to champion, stand up for and represent the causes that students care about.

In the past year we have taken our own steps to improve our sustainability as an organisation, through measures such as the opening of our vegan & vegetarian café, a new zero waste shop, and our sustainability spotlight event. Sustainability Strategy: what do you think?

Have your say on Sustainability at Southampton

We want to hear your views on sustainability at Southampton in student focus groups taking place this July. This is your chance to input on the University’s Sustainability and Environmental Strategy, which is being developed in partnership with SUSU.

A range of issues will be discussed at each focus group – such as the University’s carbon footprint, waste, sustainability in the curriculum, food on campus, and more. You can also share your ideas for initiatives, your views on how ambitious Southampton’s strategy should be, and what role students should play in its implementation.

Price Updates in The Plant Pot Zero Waste Shop

The price of goods in The Plant Pot’s zero waste gravity dispensers has recently been lowered.

Use one of the provided recycled paper bags and fill it with however much produce you would like. Prices are per 100g.

Here is a full list of the new price brackets:

A Spotlight On Sustainability

Over the past few months SUSU has made some fantastic steps towards becoming a more sustainable organisation. On Wednesday 04 December we are holding a Sustainability Spotlight in Building 42 to celebrate and inform students of the good work already taking place, and look to the future to see what more we can achieve.

On the day there will be talks in The Cube, a sustainability fair, and a networking event and Q&A with industry experts.

SUSU and University Release Joint Sustainability Statement

SUSU and the University of Southampton have released a joint statement of intent on our commitment to sustainability, minimising our impact on global ecological destruction and stabilising climate change.

  • We commit to prioritising together sustainable actions to address urgent environmental issues using the passion, creativity and scholarship of our students and staff to find new, lasting solutions.
  • The whole University community will work together to slow significantly and ultimately minimise our impact on the environment.

Sustainability Stories – watch groundbreaking documentaries on the big screen

For our new series of Sustainability Stories we will be giving students the opportunity to watch some fantastic documentaries for free on the big screen. A different documentary will be shown every month at Union Films (Level 3, Students’ Union (B42)).

This project has been led by Lucy Stephenson, our Ethics and Environment Officer, and is part of a wider project to raise awareness of environmental and social issues to students.
