Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal

In collaboration with the University’s Office for the Development of Alumni Relations, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Sports Clubs’ Coronavirus Appeal. The aim of the appeal is to raise money to help students continue participating in sports to the fullest extent possible during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a normal year, the Students’ Union is able to give a reasonable amount of funding to our sports clubs, allowing them to compete against other universities in competitions such as BUCS and to be able to afford coaching and equipment. Taekwondo Club Competitors Qualify for European University Games

Congratulations to three members of Southampton University Taekwondo Club – Isra Ilyas, Jarrell Harewood and Timurs Formulevics – on qualifying for the European University Games!

Out of all the Universities competing in BUCS and the Student National Championships Series, Southampton came joint 1st for number of qualifying athletes and were the only club to have athletes qualify in sparring and poomsae (non-contact patterns of moves).  

The European University Games will now take place 24 -27 July 2021 in Serbia due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ladies Lacrosse Win League and Western Conference Cup!

Congratulations to our Ladies Lacrosse 1st Team, who played Exeter 5ths on Wednesday 11 March in the final of the Western Conference Cup, winning with a score of 19-7! Their Club Captain, Amy, tells us more about their achievements this year…

Our Ladies 1st Team have won their league this year with a clean sheet! Seeing scores against Bournemouth 1st 15-3, Plymouth 1st 15-5 and UWE 1st 15-5.

Our team have worked hard this year, through both team bonding and training, to see our team move up the league, and ultimately push Southampton into higher levels of Lacrosse.

Taekwondo Club Place Second Overall in BUCS Championships!

Congratulations to our Taekwondo Club who placed second overall in the first ever BUCS Taekwondo Championships!

On their winning announcement on Facebook, SUTKD said:
“The team spirit at this competition was through the roof. It’s great to have ex members still coming to support SUTKD at these events – Man Fai Ng and Rhys Thomas – and thank you for helping out on the day with helping with match numbers and cheering competitors in the ring.”

Table Tennis Men’s Second Team Win the Conference Cup!

Congratulations to our Table Tennis Club Men’s 2nd team, who played Bristol’s 2nd team on Wednesday 11 March in the Conference Cup finals and won with a score of 14 – 3!

Our Men’s teams have now won the Conference Cup for two consecutive years! Next year, both teams (1st and 2nd) will be playing in the National Trophy where the competition will be even harder.

Varsity 2020 Cancelled

Following consultation with the University of Portsmouth, who are now unable to participate, we regret to announce that Varsity 2020 has been cancelled.

We are all hugely disappointed that this is the case, particularly after our earlier announcement, but the situation is unprecedented.

We would like to thank all the hard work put into this event by our staff and students.  

We will be in contact with players and spectators to advise them about refunds.

Varsity: All You Need to Know

With Varsity fast approaching this Sunday 15 March here’s everything you need to know before the big day:

  • For those of you who have bought £12 tickets (THEY ARE NOW SOLD OUT), your last opportunities to collect your t-shirts will be on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 March from the SUSU concourse (reception area of B42).
  • Spectator tickets are now on sale – if you aren’t planning to attend the Varsity after party then these tickets are a much cheaper alternative (although you won’t receive a t-shirt) than the full ticket at only £5.
