Swimmers to watch at Rio 2016

In General

The Olympic Games 2016 in Rio is set to begin on the 05 August, so to get in the sporting spirit, Rebecca James takes a look at the swimming athletes sure to win gold this summer.

One of the best parts about the Olympics is the fantastic coverage of sport – the mainstream TV channels broadcast events and sports that normally wouldn’t get a look in. And while there have been developments in recent years in terms of the broadcasting of major events in swimming, there is nothing quite like spending a week watching heats, semi-finals and finals. However, because … Read the rest

Telly Addicts: The Edge’s top TV picks

In General

Editor of The Edge, Anneka Honeyball, offers a few suggestions for shows worthy of binge-watching over the summer holidays.

The art of binge-watching is a skill that every student comes to perfect during their studies. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, we have been given the perfect excuse to procrastinate by whittling down our time, episode by episode. But during the summer, we are given that very rare opportunity wherein the art of binge-watching is more or less guilt-free. With no impending essays or exams to revise for, now is the time for you … Read the rest

Closer to The Edge: A Brief History of Your Entertainment Magazine

In General

With a new (academic) year nearly upon us, we caught up with Anneka Honeyball, Editor of The Edge (editor@theedgesusu.co.uk) in her first blog takeover to find out why she thinks you should get involved with our student-led entertainment magazine.

Though my degree is, of course, what I’m here for, a fundamental part of my University experience has been in the societies I have joined. Of the 300 student groups and societies available at Southampton, the society I chose to dedicate the majority of my time, effort and unending passion to was The Edge – the Union’s leading entertainment magazine of … Read the rest

Breaking Up For Summer

In General

Summer is here, which means that a lot of students have gone home and suddenly Southampton feels very empty.

Although it will be tough, with the nightlife at home not matching up to the Jesters standard, constantly having to explain that very funny story to your friends at home, who just do not find it funny, and loving family members who quickly irritate you, fear not, as soon enough it will be Freshers Week and you’ll be reunited with your housemates and friends.

Making the most of the summer break is different for everyone, with some people preferring a few … Read the rest

In General

Here at Southampton we have four brilliant student-run media departments, who create high quality content throughout the year; and this year they have been even more successful. SURGE were nominated for three Student Radio Awards, both the Wessex Scene and The Edge came highly commended in a Student Publication Award (Wessex Scene for Design and The Edge for Best Entertainment Piece) and SUSUtv won a NaSTA Award for their take on Top Gear.

But SUSUtv have only gone and done it again! Fresh of the back of them hitting 200,000 views on YouTube, their coverage of the SUSU Elections … Read the rest

You’ve heard of NaSTA and the SRA (national student television and radio associations) but SPA is relatively new to the family of national student media networks.
