Grad Ball: Singer Hannah Trigwell headlines Redbrick acoustic stage

We are delighted to announce that Leeds singer-songwriter, Hannah Trigwell, will be headlining our acoustic stage on the Redbrick at Grad Ball 2017 on Saturday 10 June.

If you have Ed Sheeran on repeat and your ideal night out is a chilled evening with a few beers and some acoustic guitar, our acoustic stage is the place to be.

The self-taught musician has garnered 70 million views on YouTube and has achieved numerous top-ten singles internationally. AGM: It’s time to submit your ideas

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is fast approaching on Wednesday 17 May and we are looking for your ideas to discuss on the day.

It can be about absolutely anything you would like to change about our Union – from practical to plain wacky, we’ve heard it all and we’ve made  a number of changes as a result. For example, we made Susu the cat Honorary President as a result of a suggestion from a student at AGM and we’ve included more vegan options in our Union outlets too.

Grad Ball: Tom Zanetti and K.O.Kane set to perform at The Cube

Following Tuesday’s venue line-up announcement, we are delighted to reveal that Tom Zanetti and K.O.Kane will be performing at The Cube at this year’s Grad Ball.

Tom Zanetti is most famous for his hit single, You Want Me feat. Sadie Ama. The DJ duo have also collaborated on bangers including TNT, Lose My Head and No More.

APRIL FOOLS’: The Union to stop selling pain au chocolat due to Brexit

In General

You may have read our previous blog claiming that pain au chocolat, croissants and brioche pastry products in Union outlets due to Brexit. However, we can now happily reveal that this was in fact an April Fools’ Day joke.

Pâtisserie Paradis is a completely made up company and we continue to enjoy a great relationship with our suppliers.

You can rest assured that our pastry products will still be supplied to The Shop, The Bridge and The Café as normal. Phew!

The Union to stop selling pain au chocolat due to Brexit

In General

We will no longer be selling pain au chocolat, croissants and brioche pastry products in our Union outlets due to the recent government decision to trigger Article 50 to begin the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.

The French company, Pâtisserie Paradis, that has been supplying The Shop, The Bridge and The Café for over 20 years, will sadly be bidding the Union farewell as we regrettably agree to leave our contract. Union staff to present training programme success at national conference

In General

Staff from our Learning and Development team have been invited to present their successful launch of the Union’s ‘A To B’ Project Management programme to the Charity Learning Consortium (CLC) at their annual national conference.

The conference, which will be held on Thursday 22 June in London, will host non-profit organisations from across the UK to network and share best practice.

CLC approached the Union to ask if our Learning and Development team could present a section of the conference to explain how they used the software to engage with staff on the course.

Surge Radio’s 48 Hour Marathon Returns on Thursday to raise money for Comic Relief

Surge Radio are embarking on their annual 48 hour broadcasting marathon on Thursday to raise money for Comic Relief.

The marathon, which will be broadcast live outside the Union building on the Redbrick, is due to start at midnight on Thursday, ending 48 hours later at 00:00 on Saturday 25 March.

The 40 strong team of volunteers aim to raise £480 for Comic Relief in association with RAG (Raise and Give) society  through a series of competitions, on-air challenges, and games.

Magic Society present The Museum of Magic at The Annex Theatre

Roll up, roll up for the greatest show on earth.

Tomorrow the Union’s Magic Society are putting on a magic show for one night only at The Annex Theatre.

The student group will be performing a series of tricks set in the mysterious Museum of Magic, a place where history comes to life. The show promises to take the audience on a journey through some of the greatest illusions of all time, starting off in Egypt with the world’s oldest magic trick and weaving through history to the modern day.

LGBT+ Society celebrate LGBT History Month with rainbow handprints

LGBT+ Society are on the Concourse in Building 42, Highfield campus, today creating a rainbow banner of handprints in support for LGBT History Month.

The student group have rallied students to use their handprints to celebrate equal opportunities for LGBT+ rights.

LGBT+ Society President, Jonathon St Clair-Smith says, “We’re making the banner to show unity within the community”.

Pop down to the Concourse before 15:00 today to show your support with a rainbow handprint and look out for the finished banner, which is due to be displayed at the Union Reception.
