Today marks the start of Voting Week in this year’s Spring Elections – voting opens at 09:00! If you’re a current University of Southampton student, you’re eligible to cast a vote for the students that you want to lead our Union for the next academic year. It’s simple, all you need is your Student ID to be able to vote and head over to www.susu.org/vote, or find a voting station around campus. Hello there! My name is Evie Reilly – the Vice-President Democracy & Creative Industries for 2017/18. The end of term may be fast approaching, but we at the Students’ Union have today launched our first All Student Vote of the year.
The University is entering a period of restructure led by the Vice-Chancellor. As part of this, a 7% reduction in staff costs has been announced, with 50 to 75 academic staff posts at risk from across six departments. As you may have heard, our Prime Minister has called a Snap General Election, which means the deadline to register to vote is fast approaching.
It’s really important that students have their say, so make sure you register before the following deadlines:
- Monday 22 May – Deadline to register to vote
- Tuesday 23 May – Deadline to register for postal or postal proxy vote
- Wednesday 31 May – Deadline to register for proxy vote
- Thursday 08 June – Deadline to register to vote on the day or emergency day postal votes

If you’re keen to represent the Students’ Union, and would like to become one of our next Full-time Sabbatical Officers, now is your chance to nominate yourself. After months of bitter campaigning, yesterday the U.S. finally went to the polls to choose their 45th President. Last night, as polls closed and counting began, legions of students joined Wessex Scene and Surge at The Stag’s to eagerly await the results. After a nail-biting night, we can now announce that Donald Trump won with 278 against 218 electoral college votes!
A big thank you to Wessex Scene and Surge for their overnight coverage of the results, and to everyone who joined them for the occasion.

In just our third nationwide referendum, 52% of the UK yesterday voted to leave the EU in what has been a historical decision in the future of Britain.
London’s stock market began to plunge as the Leave outcome came to light.
David Cameron, who has fiercely supported the Remain campaign, announced earlier today that he will stand down as prime minister in October following his defeat.
Two Labour MPs have also submitted a motion of no confidence in Labour leader and Remain campaigner Jeremy Corbyn.
