Come grab a doughnut for voting!

With the general election this week on Thursday (12 December), if you’re registered to vote, don’t miss out on your chance to do so!

As an incentive to practice your democratic right, we will be giving out doughnuts and hot chocolate to anyone who shows us a picture of them outside a polling station.

Show us a picture at any of these stalls on election day:

  • Highfield (Hartley Library) 10:00-18:00
  • Avenue 11:00-16:00
  • UHS (Hospital) 11:00-16:00

Have you registered to vote yet?

In General

Looking at the current situation in UK Parliament, it’s becoming more and more likely a General Election will happen soon. Now is the time to make sure you’ve registered to vote.

It’s an easy process:

  • You’ll need your national insurance number.
  • Following this you’ll be prompted to answer a series of questions. This takes no longer than 5 minutes.
  • Finally, upon completion, your local Council will process this information and let you know whether your registration has been successful. This should occur within 10 working days.

Spring Elections: Voting now OPEN

Today marks the start of Voting Week in this year’s Spring Elections – voting opens at 09:00! If you’re a current University of Southampton student, you’re eligible to cast a vote for the students that you want to lead our Union for the next academic year. It’s simple, all you need is your Student ID to be able to vote and head over to www.susu.org/vote, or find a voting station around campus. Don’t forget, if you show us your voting confirmation there will be freebies available for you during the week on campus!

All Student Vote on the University Restructure

Hello there! My name is Evie Reilly – the Vice-President Democracy & Creative Industries for 2017/18. The end of term may be fast approaching, but we at the Students’ Union have today launched our first All Student Vote of the year.

The University is entering a period of restructure led by the Vice-Chancellor. As part of this, a 7% reduction in staff costs has been announced, with 50 to 75 academic staff posts at risk from across six departments. General Election: Register to vote

As you may have heard, our Prime Minister has called a Snap General Election, which means the deadline to register to vote is fast approaching.

It’s really important that students have their say, so make sure you register before the following deadlines:

  • Monday 22 May – Deadline to register to vote
  • Tuesday 23 May – Deadline to register for postal or postal proxy vote
  • Wednesday 31 May – Deadline to register for proxy vote
  • Thursday 08 June – Deadline to register to vote on the day or emergency day postal votes

Spring Elections 2017 – Nominations are Open!

It’s that time of year again… *drum roll please* nominations for the Spring Elections 2017 have officially opened today (Monday 30 January)!

If you’re keen to represent the Students’ Union, and would like to become one of our next Full-time Sabbatical Officers, now is your chance to nominate yourself. These are paid positions and you will have the responsibility of overseeing the policy and activity zones, and setting the direction for our Union.

There are 7 positions up for grabs, and just a reminder these are:

  • Union President
  • VP Democracy and Creative Industries
  • VP Education
  • VP Engagement

U.S. Election – Results are in!

After months of bitter campaigning, yesterday the U.S. finally went to the polls to choose their 45th President. Last night, as polls closed and counting began, legions of students joined Wessex Scene and Surge at The Stag’s to eagerly await the results. After a nail-biting night, we can now announce that Donald Trump won with 278 against 218 electoral college votes!

A big thank you to Wessex Scene and Surge for their overnight coverage of the results, and to everyone who joined them for the occasion.
