It’s been an incredibly successful weekend for our student television station, SUSUtv, who have won an impressive 4 awards at the NaSTA People’s Choice Awards 2017. They were also Highly Commended in another 2 categories.
SUSUtv won in the following categories: On-Screen Talent Award (Tom Pethick), Unsung Hero Award (Dave Williams), Technical Innovation Award (Developing VT Manager) and Content Innovation Award (Women in Sport Live). They were Highly Commended for the Live Award (EU Referendum Live) and the Open Award, for their hilarious piece titled “Where do Snowmen Go in the Summer?”.

Following our blog last week, we are delighted to announce that Hindu Society have made it through the finals of the Battle of Bollywood dance competition 2017.
The group were given the opportunity to take part in a Facebook ‘like’ competition, battling it out to receive the most likes to enter the finals, which are due to be held in London next year.

Surge Radio has raised £863.40 for Comic Relief, at their annual 48 hour broadcasting marathon on Thursday – Saturday.
The total nearly doubled their initial fundraising goal of £480 for the charity.
The marathon, which was broadcast live outside the Union building on the Redbrick, started at 00:00 on Thursday, ending 48 hours later at 00:00 on Saturday 25 March.
The shows featured a series of competitions, on-air challenges, and games, including an appearance from BBC Radio 1 DJ and Surge alumna, Chris Stark, who tuned in on Thursday morning to offer the team motivation and a donation of £100.… Read the rest

The student group, Southampton Hub, launches Bio-Cycle, Southampton’s first ever student-led food waste recycling scheme in a bid to benefit the local community by recycling and repurposing otherwise wasted food.
The scheme works by providing you with a five litre food waste caddy, filters and a roll of compostable bin liners at the cost of £10, which includes automatic registration for the regular weekly food waste pickup service.
Up to 160 students are already benefitting from the project, with waste collections organised at 33 households across Southampton, equating to approximately 200kg of recycled food waste every month.

Trampolining Club had a fantastic weekend in Sheffield at the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) National Championships, taking home an incredible seven medals including four golds and three bronzes across the synchronised, individual and team categories.
The club’s President Rhys Gray, was the golden boy, taking home the title of national champion for the second year running with a gold medal in the BUCS Elite Men’s category. Rhys also won another Gold medal as part of a team effort with Louis Lister and Joe Deevoy in the group category.

Five members of our Performing Arts societies were nominated for the Daily Echo’s Curtain Call Awards in January. The Academy Award-style ceremony took place at Southampton’s Grand Harbour Hotel on Friday 27 January with more than 400 actors and theatre lovers in attendance to celebrate the achievements of youth amateur dramatics groups in the South.
The nominations are as follows:
- Darius Timmerman (Theatre group) for his role as Moses in Animal Farm. Applauded for realising “his inner holy roller perfectly as this preaching crow”.
- Charlie Randall (Showstoppers) received two nominations for his roles as Paul Muddle in Freelancers and Stephano

Massive congratulations to SUSUtv and Wessex Films for winning a total of seven awards for their films submitted as part of the Exposure Filmmakers 48 Hour Film Challenge at last month’s Southampton Film Week.
SUSUtv has been awarded ‘Best Editor’ for their submission Sentence of Sentience that tells the story of an AI who is given 24 hours to live as a human.
Wessex Films took home six awards for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best SFX, Best Actor and Best Actress.
